To think men shouldn't be allowed to drive until at least 25 - long rant - be warned!

I expect I will get lots of people saying I am being unreasonable and tarring all men with the same brush..but I am so annoyed I don't care

I had a near accident this morning because of a young male driver yet again.
He was driving in front of me, probably showing off in front of his car full of friends, swerving in an out of traffic with no indicators and when not cutting in and out he was tailgating the person in front of him.

Sometimes he was driving on the wrong side of the road just for the sake of getting a few cars in front. He must have done this about 5 times in 10 minutes.

He was in the left hand lane where the road split in 2 and stuck in traffic. The right hand lane was fairy quiet so I drove past, luckily quite slowly, and without even looking he pulled out in front of me. I had to swerve on to the other side of the road or would have hit him. I missed him by inches.

I beeped him and when I drove past (only a few seconds later because it turned out that yet again he was just trying to get a few cars in front and had gone back in the left hand lane where he started!), he didn't look remotely sorry. I doubt he even realised he almost caused an accident.

Not the most relaxing of drives to work when you are 6 months pregnant!

Considering that young men are proven to be the worst group of drivers would it not make sense to increase the age that they are allowed to drive by a few years?

YABU - the fact that some men under 25 are arseholes doesn't mean they all are.

FoxyRevenger · 22/01/2010 10:35

I think it would probably be safer if we implemented a system where there were different stages to being allowed to drive (I think maybe New Zealand has introduced this as they have a very high accident rate on their roads)

So, at first, you are not allowed any passengers and you are not allowed to drive past a certain curfew time, then as time goes by the curfew gets later, you are allowed one passenger etc etc

This way there would be no showing off in front of mates and there would be no speeding about on roads on dark nights.

BrahmsThirdRacket · 22/01/2010 11:55

YABU, some people are just twats. It's no justification for banning all under 25 men from driving.

ChilloDOESNOTLIKELIARShippi · 22/01/2010 12:04

YANBU. No-one else at all should be allowed to drive when I want to go out. That would make my life a lot easier

Seriously, though, YABU. YOu saw him driving like an idiot and knew he had something against indicating. If I were you I wouldn't have risked pulling into the other lane in case he did what he did.

Abubu · 22/01/2010 12:13

Hi,

TBH I know IABU, but I just get so annoyed with drivers who seem to take no responsibility for their actions and more often then not it seems to be young men with a car full of people intent on showing off.

He could have caused injury to me, himself and his passengers and he just didn't seem to care.

The New Zealand idea sounds good. I just think it's about time something was done about irresponsbile drivers.

Most irresponsible drivers I see aren't young. More often than not they're middle aged women!

kinnies · 22/01/2010 12:21

Not all young men are twatty drivers. But alot are. I would say that young men are the most idiotic group of people on the road. Obv there are some women who drive like twits but younger male drivers have the highest insurance rates becuse they are most likley to have an crash.
Dont know if you are BU or not.

BritFish · 22/01/2010 12:23

the twattiest drivers are young men, or old people, or buisnessmen/women.
not all, but these seem to be the worst.

IfYouCouldWouldYou · 22/01/2010 12:25

I have witnessed some bloody idiotic behaviour of lads under 25 on the roads but i have also seen Some great drivers in the under 25's.

I Think it's more to do with attitudes and i know of one idiot who is very self centered and thinks about himself without regard to others. (has this attitude in everday life) and is a reckless driver but he doesn't care.

Then i know of another who is kind and considerate towards others and generally a nice lad. He is a good driver.

I don't blame you for being annoyed in that situation it was mindless and dangerous but you see bad driving in all age groups. So YAB a bit U

OtterInaSkoda · 22/01/2010 14:03

BritFish, I'd add young women in hatchbacks with Hello Kitty steering wheel covers,(preening themselves in rearview mirror/texting mate), school run parents (mainly women, often on a mobile, often in a car too big for them to handle properly), older men driving vans, older men in cars of all types (fancy themselves as "expert" drivers and therefore allowed to drive at any speed they feel fit), men but especially women in "nippy" little cars (who've seen too many car ads where, er, nippy cars nip about town). Ummmm - does that cover it?

IMO there are terrible drivers of all ages, male and female, and all walks of life.

GrimmaTheNome · 22/01/2010 14:18

If you live in the countryside, add old men in flat caps

Also, I would like to propose the banning of white vans - they should by law all be pale pink. (I noticed the White Van Man phenomenon years before the phrase entered into the language)

geordieminx · 22/01/2010 14:22

They should have a system where you are restricted on engine size until you have been driving x amount of years.

I know this wouldnt stop people driving like twats, but it would reduce the number of cocks in cars that are clearly too powerful for them, provided by mummy and daddy, who end up causing serious accidents.

FranSanDisco · 22/01/2010 14:25

I think yabu not to include in your ban females who like to do their make up in the mirror or who can afford a better car/hair style than me, people who have faster cars than me, people who have slower cars than me, people who don't strap their kids in and those who take all bleedin' day to strap them in when I'm waiting for a space to park, old people, middle aged people, posh people and chavs/commoner types, van drivers and cab drivers and BUS drivers, school run drivers and cyclists. In order to not offend I would also include anyone else who knows me, thank you.
