Facebook - Adverts

OK - I love facebook, mostly because I have quite strict privacy controls and don't collect 'friends' like a maniac. I noticed last night that on my profile they are putting an advert up saying '7 tips to get pregnant' and telling me that infertility might not be an issue if I follow the tips.

Naturally I have clicked on the 'x' and chosen 'offensive' as the reason when prompted as I DO find it offensive given the fact that I have been trying for over 2 years and don't need a facebook add to tell me that I can get pregnant when actually I can't.

So - I was wondering how they would know that an advert like that might be relevant to me? I don't think I have ever made a direct comment or status update about my fertility.

bah!

did you mention it in any private messages to friends on facebook? I am not sure but i have heard that part of the targeted advertising uses a screening program that runs through your private communications and picks up keywords that are used to market to you.

for instance if i had a series of conversations with a friend about my dogs i might find that that the ads i was shown were for dog food etc.

Sorry to hear about the infertility. We struggled for 5 years and 3 miscarriages before we finally got a diagnosis and treatment. I hope you find some resolution.

yes I did. I wonder if that's it. Is there some kind of privacy setting for that?

I might see if I can mention anything weird in my messages and check if I get relevant adverts.

i don't believe there is a setting for it cause no person is actually viewing your communications, just a program noting words used with regularity.

you could get some interesting ad's with that experiment though!

I am waiting for the adverts about incontinence to come flooding in

I'm always getting adverts for weight-loss products. I suspect they are looking at my pictures

I know how you feel OP, I have the same problem, I have clicked x on the ad and marked as unsuitable but now I keep getting ones for free baby products, which makes me even sadder....although on a lighter note DH keeps getting banner ads on his saying "are you lookinhg for young sexy singles" whats he doing on facebook lol!

It's rubbish isn't it. Though I don't think all the ads are placed because of stuff you write about
