Foul language on Mumsnet…

Foul language on Mumsnet?

Having newly registered with Mumsnet I am dismayed, after perusing uTube and other forum sites where obscenities constantly pop up, to note use of foul language on this ?family site?.

I reported the swearing, specifically, where ?arseholes? was utilised as a reference to political parties.

The return I got from Mumsnet HQ was ??we don't think we
should be the arbiters of what people should find offensive and what
they shouldn't.? and ??We generally find it's better to let the boards self-
police??

May I engage you all in a quick survey?

Hands up all those that deem ?ARSEHOLES? as an offensive expression that should not be used on these boards??

Thank you?

Hands up those that deem ?ARSEHOLES? inoffensive??

Thanks?

Looks like the arseholes have it!

Must be lovely in your bubble idontlikeit.
I have a feeling you're fighting a losing battle.
I, on the other hand am just a lowly Sales Manager without a degree.
(I take public transport to meetings)
Don't judge me
Although when I do get taxis I always make polite conversation with the driver.
I just feel it's rude not to. Meh, maybe that's just me.

idontlikeit · 19/01/2010 12:21

Gibbon I do not need too, trust me, ask SS or a mental health specialist.

Chauffeured car as in driver, driving my car so I can work whilst en route to a meeting.

Taxi ha ha!

Loved my time here, but to be honest I would rather go back to the other Mums site where ladies are ladies.

(LLB Hons Student)

idont[sic]likeit - "it is obvious what kind of person you are to know these words in the first instance!"

But surely you must also have known these words, and known what they meant, before you encountered them here, otherwise you wouldn't be offended by them?

BigHairyLeggedSpider · 19/01/2010 12:24

Good. See ya!

Vallhala · 19/01/2010 12:24

idontlikeit, I think you might find that one or two of the rest of us have degrees too.

I must say that whilst you're entitled to your own opinions on the subject of swearing, all this chauffeured car bollocks makes you sound terribly up your own arse.

joanne34 · 19/01/2010 12:25

AIBU to find this thread Hilarious !?

idontlikeit · 19/01/2010 12:25

fairycake, unfortuntately in society we hear these awful words, it does not, however, mean we have to use them ourselves does it? Anyway as was said in the movie 'Pretty in pink' by Duckie, 'I am off like a dirty shirt'.

Bobbiewickham · 19/01/2010 12:25

Blimey!

Is "bollocks" rude then?

I thought "bollocks" was another word for "mangoes"!

No wonder the greengrocer looked funny at me when I asked if I could squeeze his bollocks to check they were ripe...but at least I can rest easy in the knowledge that I am, indeed, a lady.

idontlikeit · 19/01/2010 12:26

Vallhala, I am truly up my own bum, its much nicer than YOUR world here! (wink)

Bobbiewickham · 19/01/2010 12:27

idontlikeit said bum!

idontlikeit · 19/01/2010 12:27

MrsGazebo

My mother always taught me that if you raise your voice or use foul language, you are losing the battle already!

One up to me then hey?

WhoIsAsking · 19/01/2010 12:28

idontlikeit is a genius.

MrsGazebo · 19/01/2010 12:29
Biscuit
Bobbiewickham · 19/01/2010 12:30

Oh, I've won many a battle by yelling "shitfuck!"

You should try it.

It makes me feel alive...

LittleMrsHappy · 19/01/2010 12:30

Im sorry but I do have to LOL! at the low IQ id you say obscenities or are stressed if you say a norty word.

Well I must tell my lectures/bosses that ALL my work in my degrees and my personal life must go down the lavvy, due to my occasional outburst with norty slang words, as some nutter on the web says its ever so true.

and Im sure SS will come and do assessment check on a child, because their parents say norty words on a Internet forum

pranma · 19/01/2010 12:32

Actually I dont much like it either[its an age thing]but it is not my place to object to swearing from other people.I dont do it but I do read and accept it.I enjoyed Lady Chatterley,I love Larkin-maybe it's literature in disguise.

Bobbiewickham · 19/01/2010 12:33

Seriously, I really love swearing. Really love it. But it's all about context. I wouldn't swear in front of little kids, or someone else's kids, or people I don't know well, and I can't be doing with effs every other word.

But really, when I meet someone who lets out a crafty and well-judged "fuck", it's like a meeting of minds happens and we can both relax.

Similarly, if someone I meet hammers their thumb and says "Oh, fiddlesticks" I know we're just not on the same wavelength.

It's a bit of a social barometer for me, rightly or wrongly.

Vallhala · 19/01/2010 12:34

On a completely different note I'd be interested to know the career path for someone with an English degree who is now an LLB student (DD is making career choices).

Are you still there idontlikeit?

VinegarTits · 19/01/2010 12:35

But surely you must think 'arsehole' is a nice word idontlikeit? seeing as you are one

displayuntilbestbefore · 19/01/2010 12:36

rofl that someone think that just because the rest of us don't stoop so low as to list all our academic qualifications and work status, then we must be inferior to her/him!
Think you might need a big slice of humble pie if you actually knew the background of some of the people you are attempting to talk down to!

idontlikeit -You are well worth a hearty chuckle, I'll give you that - laughing at you, not with you.

tearinghairout · 19/01/2010 12:38

I prefer not to read it here, TBH. It's too inyerface & is usually inappropriate.

I think swearing has its place. Using it constantly is like wearing your ballgown to the supermarket - it becomes mundane & you have nothing for special occasions.

I would defo use an appropriate Anglo Saxon word if I hit my thumb with a hammer.

brightongirldownunder · 19/01/2010 12:39

I'm obviously as thick as shit if IQ is linked to being foul mouthed. Oh well, better to be that than up my own arse I suppose....

MumsieNonna · 19/01/2010 12:40

It's called freedom of speech love. I think the 'baddest' word I have ever uttered on MN was shite but I will feckin' well swear if I want to.

BTW, arsehole is a splendid word.

Trolls off singing... "What a wonderful fish a sole is, what a beautiful fish are soles, no finer fish ever seen on a dish, are soles, are soles."

sorry, I can't remember the words.

idontlikeit · 19/01/2010 12:42

Vallhala just to satisfy you, I am having a career change, hence the law student status, mature mum of 3 changing her career, is that ok with you?

Moijaimelacountry · 19/01/2010 12:44

at education having anything to do with this. I'm sure my 4 year old could use the word "fuck" if I chose to teach her it, I'm sure she'd use it in context too. Does pre school education count as "educated"? I don't choose to say it infront of her therefore she doesn't use it. I do choose to type it on here occasionaly. Does that make me a bad parent? apparently.

disclaimer - I don't have a degree, please don't be offended by any gramatical mistakes.
