to rather expect a head of state not to look utterly bored throughout the national anthem?

I'm sure they hear it all the time but would it kill them to smile a little? Or show their appreciation? Or at least an expression of devotion to their country?

The Queen manages a lovely little smile and look of reverence whenever the national anthem is played so why can't more do this?

And as for ignoring inspecting the troops as you walk past looking straight ahead with a stony set expression, words fail me.

I'd like a little dance, mouthing the words or clapping along in future

the troops thing is weird as he is non military and it must be uncomfortable for all concerned imo would like to hope he doesn't ignore them though

sorry i thought that this was about the pm
apologies

It's not about the PM, although he does it too. It's a general thing (specifically prompted by a particularly shocking display on my TV atm!).

I'd prefer an expression of discomfort and jerk of the head (a la Gordon) to the stony set expression I just saw.

Well of course she manages a smug little smile, have you ever listened to the effing lyrics? If I had a load of subservient peasants singing that about me I'd be positively beaming.
