weird but equally weird that as a grown woman, and a thirsty grown woman you didn't think to ask for a drink for yourself.

'Tis a wee bit strange, yes. We always have a cold drink with food. I do find it odd when people have tea or coffee with a meal though.

Hmmm before I had ds I would have said it was odd but nowadays we have drinks after meals (unless out) as he will just drink the water / juice and eat nothing.

If you wanted one, you should have opened your gob and asked . They don't do it, maybe they have a drink after. To the muttering you could have replied "really? funny how everyone has their own way of doing things. We tend to have a drink with our meals, mind if I just grab one? Thanks."

I don't think mutterers should be allowed to get away with it, tbh. They mutter and we are supposed to pretend we didn't hear. Feck that! Reply. Call them on it. or say "sorry, didn't quite catch that, what did you say?"

I find that some people when they have children come up with all sorts of rules that they expect others to follow, which is a but rude really.

You should have asked if you wanted one. Although I do like wine with dinner (when not pg) I also observe the no liquid with solids rule to aid digestion.

My mum wouldn't let us have drinks with dinner, but now I have my own rules we do have drinks. Mum didn't like extra stuff on the table and kids wondering around getting glasses and using the sink when she was trying to dish up I think.

i would have said it was odd until i was talking to someone about digestion before christmas. apparently it is bad to drink whilst eating. and better to chew chew chew using the saliva in your mouth which starts to break down your food on its way to the stomach. if you dont chew properly (apparently the food you swallow should be the consistancy of runny weetabix) and just wash it down with a drink then your food will not digest properly leading to excess wind,bloating, indigestion and constipation. so there you go!

I always have a drink with my meal. Water or squash type thing. But you should never have a cup pf tea with your food as the tanine saps all the vitamins out... or so my mum's friend told me years and years ago and now I just believe it. Nice to have a drink with food - how on earth can it interfere with digestion???

I would've asked for water or got up and said "Can i get myself a glass of water?" if the mum was being arsey.

I have noticed recently that quite a lot of older people don't drink with meals, they have a cup of tea afterwards.

That is nearly up there with that person on teh swimming thread who claimed that if you drink a glass of cold water you can die ROFL

PuppyMonkey there are all sorts of "theories" to it from interfering with digestive juices , impacting on protein break down and possibly more likely inadvertantly using liquids to aid swallowing rather than chewing thoroughly. Personally I'm slightly susceptible to acid reflux (lovely) and avoiding drinking with food does help with that whatever the reason. To be fair I think most people who avoid mixing liquids-solids would think water was the least unacceptable thing to drink while eating but I'm not a fan of water (odd I know).

i like a drink with food if i'm eating at someone's house, in case their food is rank so i can wash it down quickly.

It's a wonder I'm not dead really, reckless water drinker that I am!
