XH not paid maintenance for nearly 18 mths, been in and out of jobs (his decision to leave them) and pleading poverty. I emailed him a few days ago to ask when he'd be paying maintenance as he's now in work. He replied that he's got no money. A letter has come to my address today addressd to him, so i opened it. It was from his pension company saying they've sent him a payment of £3,500!

Forward it to the csa?

Well, I know you can't actually do anything because it's illegal to open someone else's mail.

However, if he doesn't know this, could you phone him and say "How lucky, you've just had £x, now you can pay for your daughter..."

Have you made a claim to the csa?

Has he ever paid maintenance?

Is it a cash payment from the pension fund or a top up to his pension?

18 months is a long time to go without any money from him so I would be asking the CAB for advice.

The letter was addressed to him but stupidly he hasn't ever changed his address with his pension company so it had my address on!

I've never been through the CSA - we had a private agreement which he paid up until 18 mths ago, but has stopped paying since then as he's been in and out of jobs. Even now there's no point going to CSA as he says he's self employed and therefore not earning anything, (although I know he is I can't prove it). I've resigned myself to not getting any money from him.

The letter says the pension company have sent £3,500 to Transact. I can't see him transferring to another pension so I'm assuming he's cashed it in.

I would go to the csa anyway.

He sounds like a shirker so I would be upfront about it just to shit him up.

Dont be defeatist. He hasnt paid for 18 months and at this rate you wont see anything off him.

Have you got a scanner/photocopier so you can make a copy of the letter?
