to be fuming that one of our local oversubscribed schools was half empty when I looked around it this morning?

When I challenged the Head about the number of empty rooms vs pupil admission number he said that the school number was set at the maximum capacity of the school hall to enable the whole school to meet together.

AIBU in thinking that that is a rubbish reason?

This school has fantastic facilities and I am sure it could easily accommodate more pupils.

Oh, and just in case you want to check out my old threads, my name was thedolly. I changed it for Halloween and never changed it back - the DC love it .

What rubbish.

Your anger wasn't generated by the sympathy for others who didn't get in.

It was generated because your dd didn't get in.

What next?

Are you going to work out how many pupils per sq ft the school could accommodate and AIBU on that?

Hulababy · 13/01/2010 22:36

But it wouldn't be just one class for one year (the 30 children). They then have to open up etra classes for subsequent year groups surely? So would end up with an extra 4/5 classes of 30 each.

And would that schol still the the same great school with fab facilities?

I doubt it - all those specialist rooms will be gone.

MillyR · 13/01/2010 22:37

Dolly, i might be being a bit thick or have not read the thread properly... What makes you think your DD will not get a place at any of these 3 schools?

thedollyridesout · 13/01/2010 22:46

I haven't even applied yet Hedwood.

The likely hood is that she won't MillyR.

It would be 120 extra pupils which would still mean that the school would have less pupils than the other which I am sure is smaller.

The how many pupils per square foot maybe one route to go down.

I think Dolly feels that as her DD would be "an asset to any school", she is in fact entitled to any school.
Yes it's a sad state of affairs that sometimes you have to move to a different area to get better education, but guess what, it's life! Not great, but shit happens, as parents we just have to deal with it the best we can. Not by expecting the system to accomodate us because we are so much better than anyone else.
Dolly, you seem to think the world owes you and your family something, that attitude gets other peoples backs up. It's not the best way to get help or advice. Listening and taking in the negatives as well as the positive ideas on these threads may help you gain some insight. At the moment all you seem to want is for people to see the world as you do.
The school is good because it's not rammed full of kids to the rafters. I'll bet the teachers know every child by name, not something that happens in bigger schools. You're getting annoyed about the thing that makes the school good because it doesn't suit your needs. So yes, YABVU.

OneTwoBuckleMyShoe · 13/01/2010 22:53

Hmmm I have a funny feeling that you are talking about my school here OP! It all fits...

GracieW · 13/01/2010 22:53

All this angst and you don't even know?

Come back to us when if you get rejected and we will help then...maybe...

thedollyridesout · 13/01/2010 22:55

It's a very nice school OneTwo. Did I meet you today?

OP posts:
fiveisanawfullybignumber · 13/01/2010 22:55

Oh, do tell OneTwoBuckleMyShoe. where are you???

OneTwoBuckleMyShoe · 13/01/2010 22:56

I am currently on maternity leave so no, does it have a fabulous location near some gardens?

thedollyridesout · 13/01/2010 22:58

I honestly don't think that the school ethos or it's standards would be compromised by increasing the intake fiveis.

I don't think that I am better than anyone but I am definitely more open-minded than many people.

OneTwoBuckleMyShoe · 13/01/2010 23:04

Ah it is my school then! Interesting, the school currently finds it hard to cope with our large class sizes and most rooms do not have the capacity to hold 32 also 5 form is really not an option with the current building (as you will have seen there is little room for expansion) having said that it IS an excellent school and I wish you luck in your appeal

thedollyridesout · 13/01/2010 23:11

I think I need more than luck in that case OneTwo. I thought that 32 being an even number would mean that an extra 1 could be accommodated IYKWIM. The desks seemed to be of the type that seat 2.

OP posts:
OneTwoBuckleMyShoe · 13/01/2010 23:14

They are and the rooms do have 32 spaces but often at the expense of one pairing being pushed to the side of the room, my old room is in the English section and I had a form of 32 with two children being stuck on the side because of lack of space, utter nightmare to go around the room helping the class!

thedollyridesout · 13/01/2010 23:17

Any comments about the other faith school in the town?

OP posts:
thedollyridesout · 13/01/2010 23:19

I guess the mistake was made when the numbers went up from 30. Do you think it would be worth appealing?

OP posts:
OneTwoBuckleMyShoe · 13/01/2010 23:20

Bigger certainly but even more full than ours, many of our Polish pupils are on the waiting list as they are RC and they have the specialist EAL facilities, a very good school also

OneTwoBuckleMyShoe · 13/01/2010 23:23

It is always worth trying and I do suggest you go for it as our numbers do change (see other post) but do be aware that most appeals that succeed are faith based as we are a VA CofE school

thedollyridesout · 13/01/2010 23:25

It didn't feel bigger but certainly fuller and the Head did say that she thought we stood a good chance. She said that she thought that perhaps people weren't applying because they thought they wouldn't get in.

Arrrgh - I have to apply by Friday and I don't know whether or not to put our catchment school first as I may stand a better chance of getting in there on appeal. It is not my favourite.

thedollyridesout · 13/01/2010 23:29

Thank you so much for your input to this thread OneTwo - you have restored my faith in the Human Condition .

No worries, let me know how you get on I might be meeting your DD in September when I return from maternity leave.

thedollyridesout · 13/01/2010 23:34

I wish .
