I have read so many posts tonight that are not short of bullying to be honest. So someone has questions and ideas that do not sound particulary sane, so what! This is exactly why some people "including me" are a little worried about posting thier ideas, fears, little problems that to the individual are huge but to some of you lot are funny or total lies that you can belittle and make fun off.

If that is what mumsnet is all about then you carry on

OP posts:
thesunshinesbrightly · 12/01/2010 11:23

I posted about a month ago and someone i've never heard of called me a troll I have been on here for ages.

It is annoying when you get called a Troll and your not, but 9/10 Mumsnetters are right.

ChickensLoveMarmite · 12/01/2010 11:30

I just think everyone's due on. I am. So I'm avoiding the bun fights. Not because I'm scared, you understand, but simply because I don't want to unleash actual Hell on to this lovely virtual world....

OrmIrian · 12/01/2010 11:44

I was called a troll once.

But I think it was a joke

BTW LOL lol LOL lol LOL. Just for good measure.

lucyellensmumagain · 12/01/2010 12:31

lol chicken

I have trolled once, but i was rubbish and people saw straight through me. I am just not very funny - now the kitchen utensils......................

EdgarAllenSnow · 12/01/2010 12:45

what then is the difference between a contentious poster and a troll?

longevity?

lucyellensmumagain · 12/01/2010 12:53

dunno, i always thought a troll was someone who was posting utter bullshit, very often for a laugh. But i think it also means someone who posts for "affect" to generate bad feeling and generally cause an argument?

I posted about granny murray as my childminder, but only got about five posts in before i was rumbled

piscesmoon · 12/01/2010 12:56

Trolls want a lot of attention! I was the only one foolish to answer one yesterday and I bet it was a disappointment!

thesunshinesbrightly · 12/01/2010 12:56

Lucy that is a troll and making things up about serious subjects causes offence.

bibbitybobbitysantahat · 12/01/2010 12:58

Contentious posters who are trolling are just not posting the truth.

I don't for one minute think WashWithCare really believes that her hard hitting breastfeeding ad is a good idea. She knows perfectly well that it would never happen and the reasons for it. She just wants to get a rise out of people.

lucyellensmumagain · 12/01/2010 13:09

That post was fucking vile, im surprised mnet didnt pull it tbh.

So, sunshine? Are you telling me off?

EdgarAllenSnow · 12/01/2010 13:13

so - sincerity is the deciding factor -

if, Daftpunk, for instance, spouts off her support for the BNP - that isn't trolling, because it is sincere, whereas, if i did the same, i would definitely be trolling.

though that really doesn't always make much difference to the nature of what actually gets said though, does it?

and i found Giraffes' Fanjo trollin thread hilarious

lucyellensmumagain · 12/01/2010 13:14

ah but i suppose there is a difference between being a troll and being a twunt, and im sure DP wont mind me saying that

bibbitybobbitysantahat · 12/01/2010 13:15

Yes, Edgar, I was going to mention daftpunk as I know she has been accused of trolling. I don't believe her to be a troll. Tis just a feeling, mind, I don't know her in rl!

bibbitybobbitysantahat · 12/01/2010 13:30

Having said all that, I am not sure why MILKMONSTER is thought to be FarmGirls but I am not sufficiently interested to go through the thread and unpick it. And I think it may have been deleted anyway?

Oh there you are Royalty. Can you explain (just to me you understand) how you know MILKMONSTER = FarmGirls?

I will then update my own spreadsheet natch .

Royalty I thought WWC's posting style was similar to a man who was recently hunting down his estranged and disappeared partner... I think, though, that I may be looking for a conspiracy where none exists!

BitOfFun · 12/01/2010 13:44

You are not alone, Belle. My spreadsheet just lists that in green though, as a possiblity.

EdgarAllenSnow · 12/01/2010 13:46

well, i think my point is that there are some really unpleasant kinds of trolling -

the kind where sob stories are made up to extort money from MNers

the kind where pervy men are trying to abuse Mners IRL

the kind where people post a load of tosh on the bereavement/ support side with some kind of weird emotional vampirism in mind

that people who post stuff that is merely contentious (and actually, whether or not the OP is trollng, others may genuinely have sympathy with their point of view) don't bother me so much. People can be contentious anyway - trolls or not. This is the tinterweb, and shooting the breeze is part of the fun.

and i defend DP's right to spout her crap, as i would rather stay on a forum where she is allowed to do so, than one that censored her out. where could such censorship stop?

and i don't think all MNers are always right about it - on a parking thread of all things the OP was alleged to be a troll...in fact it gets said so often on so many topics the allegation is decidedly over used.

BelleDameSansMerci · 12/01/2010 13:54

I agree about DP. I don't like her views on anything I've seen so far but I don't think she's a troll and she's entitled to her opinion.

I think my main issue with WWC was that it felt like we (MNers) were being deliberately played on the threads. The BF one in particular hit several people quite hard. The two earlier ones not so much as they were simply contentious and raised the exact response you'd expect. Still felt people being played but not so emotional.

lucyellensmumagain · 12/01/2010 14:05

I have to jump to DPs defence though - we have crossed swords many a time - christ she dont have spout some shit, and i abnor anything to do with the BNP and wont even get into that with her, but i have had a really hard time, and she has always been one of the many lovely ladies who have been kind to me on here - so yes, she is very naughty, shes getting worse sometimes posts just to wind people up but she does have a kind nature too.

pagwatch · 12/01/2010 14:09

I think I have only ever suggestedthat someone was a troll once. My reaction to trolls tends to be to either ignore them or bait them - but I bait less often know as I think the sad weirdos trolls just like the attention.

I do like spoof posts though and always cross my fingers that I have spotted them and am not joining in with someone who genuinely thinks that pensioners with mobility chairs should have shovels attached to the front and forced to clearthe raods before they qualify for their fuel payment.

I think when you are new to the board it can seem as if lots of people know each other and are excluding others when perhaps the truth is that saddos like meregular posters just recognise names and develop a bit of a history. But I have never, ever to my knowledge met a MNer in RL and have only got to 'know' people by just spontaneously sharing a joke, an opinion, a fight or a name check which invites familiarity. It probably looks really clichey until you just join in..

drloves8 · 12/01/2010 14:10

trolls are imo all different . some are malicious ,some are unbelieveable, some are believable and "suck you in" ...... and then you get the ones who arent really "trolls" but just post very very funny and amusing nonsence that brightens up your day.... like the infamous pirate thread, the kitchen untensil humping dh thread, and then theres shiney - who isnt a troll , but by god ,you cant help but wonder how the girl manages to get herself into so much mischeif ! - she's hillarious! .
troll hunting is not something im good at , i tend to believe everyone...and the one occassion i was convinced an op was a troll i was very very wrong ( hi beautiful )

drloves8 · 12/01/2010 14:14

i so wish i could spell, sorry . lots of mistakes.
