I have read so many posts tonight that are not short of bullying to be honest. So someone has questions and ideas that do not sound particulary sane, so what! This is exactly why some people "including me" are a little worried about posting thier ideas, fears, little problems that to the individual are huge but to some of you lot are funny or total lies that you can belittle and make fun off.

If that is what mumsnet is all about then you carry on

Lots of newbies post and are never accused of being trolls because they post reasonable, sane and believable OPs.
When the posts are deliberately inflammatory, the suspicions are aroused as an OP such as that is clearly posted by someone who has checked out the topics that are guaranteed to get strong feelings from MNers and when OP continues to post more and more comments that are blatantly designed to get a rise then the likelihood of them being a troll are quite high.
I don't agree that the threads you refer to over the last few days are threads that would seriously make someone new to MN avoid posting a genuine query.

SophieDahling · 11/01/2010 23:41

I know what you mean justsue. I doubt you'll get a lot of replies here because a lot of people seem to be in thrall, in a rather playground hierarchy sort of way, to the regulars. You'll get to recognise their names eventually. They can do no wrong, their opinions are always hilariously received by the rest who are desperate to break into the clique, they will mercilessly mock anyone they suspect of being a "troll" and have lots of private jokes that the average poster can't fathom. It's like a hideous girls' boarding-school dorm at times. I think they hang out mainly on AIBU and CHAT. They tend to leave pregnancy alone though.

They are the ones who give MN a bad name in the press. Most people are genuine though.

I fear you're going to bear the brunt of them now for having dared to say this so maybe put a tin hat on! And hide your pocket money

LauraIngallsWilder · 11/01/2010 23:42

Oh and Welcome to MN - we are lovely honest!

MillyR · 11/01/2010 23:42

Who are the regulars?

justsue · 11/01/2010 23:42

Hey Im genuine and its the first night I have posted honest lol, just after reading some of the stuff and not really knowing the history I felt compelled to write that.

Now where is me zip to shut my mouth lol

OP posts:
gaelicsheep · 11/01/2010 23:44

I'm surprised that it's supposedly regulars who are currently engaged in the troll hunt. Either everyone, not just me, has changed name, or it's a whole new bunch of regulars from the ones I knew.

VinegarTits · 11/01/2010 23:44

thats a bit nasty sophiedarling are you deliberately being inflammatory? newbies away think MN is cliquey, thats because they dont give the regulars half a chance, they just get all huffy when they dont get the attention they are seeking

mummysgoingmad · 11/01/2010 23:44

SophieDahling - couldn't have said it better myself..gold star!!

displayuntilbestbefore · 11/01/2010 23:46

or maybe the regulars are just a bit better at distinguishing between genuine and troll-like OPs?

VinegarTits · 11/01/2010 23:46

welcome justsue, you will get used the trolling and will be able to spot one when one comes along

claw3 · 11/01/2010 23:46

Anyone who starts a thread 'hi im new' is a troll.

I could be wrong.

Hedwood · 11/01/2010 23:46

gaelic it wasn't a troll hunt in the end, she found us and started again!

Anyway. justsue welcome. We are all a nice bunch, but when someone comes on and posts lots of threads about different things we tend to think .

BitOfFun · 11/01/2010 23:48

What do I have to do to get a gold star from the teacher? My playground conduct is unbecoming, apparently- I am due a detention I think.

VinegarTits · 11/01/2010 23:48

justsue · 11/01/2010 23:49

FGS - get off yerselves... I posted a suggestion that a public health campaign which highlighted the link between breastfeeding and reducing your risk of breast cancer woudl be a good idea..

The link bteween the 2 is an accepted fact - you may not like the idea of a campaign, but it's juust an idea.

I'm sorry people have rel/friends who have had camcer, or have had it themselves. You'd expect that - breast cancer is really common -that's why promorting bf-ing is esepcially important. And just because bf-ing is hard, and not everyone manages it - that odens't mean you don't promote it.

When the so-called non-troll real posters started posting an article about a woman bf-ing a dog, and no one seemed to take offence at that, I have to say I was kind of surprised.

I really genuniely don't get how no one could find a tiliitating article like that, which is actively taking the piss out of bf-ing woman as a subject of humour.

So gaelicsheep, if you feel that I have some how blotted my copy book, and want to stay here to giggle with the others over the Get A Life article - you go for it.. I wont' be pushing you out of the way for a space...

BoysAreLikeDogs · 11/01/2010 23:51

oooh almost a baptism by fire for you, Sue

Welcome

VinegarTits · 11/01/2010 23:51

now where is this troll thread so i can go and bash one have a look?

BoysAreLikeDogs · 11/01/2010 23:51

urgh

it was all going very nicely then

LauraIngallsWilder · 11/01/2010 23:52

Display that is exactly it
"or maybe the regulars are just a bit better at distinguishing between genuine and troll-like OPs"
Regulars can normally spot a troll like op.....

I agree there is an element of playground bullying on mn but it isnt always the highfrequency posters that do it - often it is people that just want to cause a fight or be rude for fun.

And whilst the highfrequency posters (ooh get me with the statistics!) are often very clique that is usually becuase they spend HOURS on mn so 'know' each other well - they are also often some of the kindest and most thoughtful mnetters you could hope to 'meet' online

LauraIngallsWilder · 11/01/2010 23:53

WWC - you sound like such a lovely person!

And no need at all to be rude to gaelicsheep - her suggestion about a name change was a good one! noone will ever take you seriously with your current name, sorry

justsue · 11/01/2010 23:55

OMG and there was me thinking everything was going nicely and i was going to say "Im going to bed and have to be up for work in the morning, my last four days before I get made redundant (thats another story lol) and i read above

OMG u lot are nutters lol in the nicest possible way
