To hate a certain men's smelly 'perfume' ad because it's sexist

I don't even want to name the ads because I don't want to give them the advertising... I hate them! The current one says 'women always change their minds' so use our smelly perfume which somehow also changes. Every single one I've seen has been a bunch of sexist crap and I find them offensive. (Obviously their not aimed at me then aye? )

What a dilemma! ...because the only way to avoid any male to which this kind of sexist crap advertising appeals, would be to purchase some oneself, to ensure an awareness of the stench that goes with

bebemoohatessnot · 11/01/2010 10:13

So it would seem

I sort a similar ad, but the line was 'women get bored easily.' I liked it, and thought that the man changing his appearance all the time and having to make an effort was good. I didn't see the sexism.

mrmellors · 11/01/2010 10:18

I hate the one where the man walks into a shop and all the women lose their clothes. Really unsubtle. Why not actually just say "buy this shitty aftershave, and women will literally drop their knickers in front of you." Utterly crass.

BertieBotts · 11/01/2010 10:23

I always thought the ads for this brand were supposed to be a bit tongue in cheek - people know that not all women "get bored easily" - it's a joke.

It is mainly used by teenage boys anyway so I don't think you have much to worry about unless you're in the market for a toyboy

bebemoohatessnot · 11/01/2010 10:24

MillyR do you feel that women get bored easily?

And I guess I don't see it so much as him making an effort, but manipulating the situation and being something he is not to 'get the girl'

I have no idea if women get bored easier than men, but if there is a gender difference one way or the other, who cares? Getting bored easily is hardly a big deal.

It is clearly meant to be a joke.

And changing your appearance is not changing who you are.

Op, you are overthinking this.

bebemoohatessnot · 11/01/2010 10:30

tongue in cheek but still sexist

are jokes about disabled people acceptable? Or should jokes about race stereotypes be acceptable?

Where should the line be drawn? and shouldn't we really be trying to encourage teenage boys to be more thoughtful and respectful and help them learn to deal with their desires then encouraging them to become the kind of men as adults we all really dislike?

Bebe, I agree. It's insidious sexism (not overt in the sense that its presentation leads to people generally being happy to pass it off as tongue in cheek, so 'ok') ...and actually not very funny IMO.

bebemoohatessnot · 11/01/2010 10:45

Advertising has subtle effects on all of us. It manipulates and coerces certain members of society. (Any doubts? look at how teenagers are being tempted to buy buy buy.) And I, yes, have a problem when the message it sends is a negative one and one that in my opinion helps us take a step backward not forward. One needs to be thoughtful and consider what one sees in advertising (and in all media) and not just brush things off as being inconsequential.

It's the ones for a popular airline that are getting on my tits at the moment.

These ones - some of them have been quite funny, some not great, but I reserve my real bile for those burger ads where the woman rotates on the sofa and loses her clothes. Those ads are just nasty.

HerBeatitude · 11/01/2010 10:52

I haven't seen ANY of these ads.

Am rather proud of that.

bebemoohatessnot · 11/01/2010 11:01

HerBeatitude, some people are so lucky
May you long be in a sexist advertising free zone.
