I'm a teacher not a bloody babysitter!

So SO annoyed by the guy on BBC News 24 just now who suggests that if teachers can't get to the school they teach at because of snow, they should go to the nearest school and set up 'some kind of a crèche facility'!

How much would you pay a person to look after thirty kids for five hours a day? £8 per hour, per child? Then fantastic, bring it on!

Are teachers simply glorified babysitters? Am I being unreasonable to be so annoyed by this?

I thought that we are meant to go to our nearest school and offer our services if we can't get to our own. Personally I can't see anything wrong with that idea and you wouldn't need to babysit - you could teach!

I think that was badly worded, and can see why you feel irate, teachers are of course not glorified babysitters.

However, I thought that teachers are actually supposed to report to the nearest school if they can't get to theirs due to bad weather, but that the rule is not usually enforced?

£8 per hour/per child?? is that what a creche costs?

schools shutting is causing havoc for the staffing in hospitals, because so many nurses/support staff a women with school age children.. and, of course this is the busiest time of year in hospitals so things are very difficult at the moment..

I don't think you are being unreasonable but I think there might be some something to it. My DH who is a teacher was told by his (admittedly evil control freak of a) headteacher that teachers would have to report to a nearby school if their school was closed and others nearby were open. Not sure how that works with CRB checks as they are all space specific now.

CRB check required for each school means you can't just turn up with a happy smile and a bag of crayons.
Especially if you've eaten all the red ones cat.

Most teachers live outside of the authority, the CRB checks would not cover them to go to the nearest/ any other school, it would be illegal... etc. etc.

I think "some kind of creche facility" is the laughable bit, not the idea that we should do some kind of work on days for which we are paid.

But "some kind of creche facility" is very vague indeed. Would it be the closest school, or the closest school in our age range? I'm a secondary teacher. I would be bad at looking after a bunch of 5 years olds for a day. With no preparation, no resources, no experience. Very bad.

Great idea to go and offer your services at the nearest catchment area school.

Maybe it could work for kids too.

Not just in snow - all the time. There's a revolutionary idea for you.

We could run a business though, one teacher and 8 pressganged children shovelling snow.

Literacy, possibly including Anglo-Saxon
maths weight, volume and lots of problem-solving questions. Plus tables chanting in rhythm
Art, especially the frostbite colour wheel from pink to red, white, blue black

Exactly - as opposed to staying at home marking/ planning etc. etc. let's just look after children, and do no work at all...

Maybe SAHMs should do it instead... Not workable it is?

I thought the crb check covered you working anywhere for the same employer, ie for the same LA?

It was specifically the 'creche' reference that set me off, I didn't mean to rehash done CRB stuff, so my apologies.

The implication is that teachers are only needed so that parents can go to work blows raspberries

Nope, I worked in two schools and had to have 2 CRBs

strikeout bastards.

But...but...if my children's school is shut, I can't go to work in my school. Primary schools are childcare for sure. They're not just that, and they're not primarily that even, but they are undeniably childcare.
