to think Pepper Pig is slightly sexist towards Daddy Pig?

Daddy Pig seems to fit many negative male stereotypes while Mummy Pig is always portrayed as the better of the two. Can this be a good thing for children to learn? It doesn't particularly offend me but just wondered if anyone else had noticed?

YANBU. It's been very much noted in our house too - my DH finds it quite an offensive programme in the message it portrays to small children about their male parent.

you could always ask Miss Rabbit on the live webchat she's running at the moment..

wearthefoxhat · 08/01/2010 18:36

Poor Daddy Pig - he's always being told he's too fat! Mummy pig's not that far behind him.

Oink oink

DunderMifflin · 08/01/2010 18:38

It's just the same as adverts where men are either really thick or trying to get out of doing the cleaning, etc and women's sole motivation is to have a bubblebath or a new fragrance for fabric softener.

MoChan · 08/01/2010 18:39

YANBU. He's portrayed as such a buffoon. I don't let my daughter watch it (my step daughter brought a DVD to the house, and I have 'mislaid' it).

I really don't like it.

manonfire · 08/01/2010 18:40

I've seen daddy pig fail at DIY, map reading and cutting the grass and he gets comments about his "round tummy" every episode. I wonder if he cries himself to sleep every night

OP posts:
ruddynorah · 08/01/2010 18:43

well sometimes daddys ARE fat buffoons, hence kids love it

BelleDameSansMerci · 08/01/2010 18:47

My stepfather is appalled by Peppa Pig. My DD, my mother and I love it. But I think you're right. Poor Daddy Pig.

As for Miss Rabbit's webchat, I'll never watch PP in the same light again!

MrDrool · 08/01/2010 18:52

Daddy pig is a great, loving, caring parent.

If he has a few slapstick moments along the way so be it....I think Peppa Pig is brilliant and love watching it with DS.

MinnieMummy · 08/01/2010 18:52

I'd say it has equally outdated female stereotypes. Peppa and her friends mostly play at fairies, dolls and princesses and when they get out books at the library the boys get 'action' while the girls get nurses etc. Hello, 21st century??!

CakeBuddy · 08/01/2010 18:56

This thread makes me laugh!

Daddy Pig does profess to be an 'expert' at everything and then has no bloody clue. Yes he's overweight but still did the fun run, yes he's a bit lazy (Mr Potato episode) and no I doubt Mummy Pig is 'getting any' but he's also a very hard working architect so clearly ambitious and well educated (although mummy pig does also work from home, in between playing the Happy Chicken game with George) but the bloke manages to get home in time for the kids bed most nights and George and Peppa love jumping up and down in muddy puddles with him.

My 2yr old DD really LOVES it. Can you tell?

qwertpoiuy · 08/01/2010 19:01

Where is Miss Rabbit's Live Webchat???

YANBU.

southeastastra · 08/01/2010 19:03

not all the male pigs are portrayed that way just daddy pig. anyway i think he likes the attention of being slightly dopey.

Theochris · 08/01/2010 19:04

Daddy pig, fixes mummy's PC and the car wash, and he is surprisingly brilliant at swimming and diving, you need to watch more carefully.

YABU

kettlechip · 08/01/2010 19:08

Live webchat available in the webchat section on main page. Would link, but am crap at linking, sorry..

catastrojb · 08/01/2010 19:10

i've nnot yet watched it (dd only 9 months and i'm trying to put off children's programmes for as long as possible...) but by the sounds of it the daddy pig is similar to mine...who enjoys and plays up on the idea of being a bit daft!

Theochris · 08/01/2010 19:11

Also he solves hard equations while Mrs Cat and Mr Rabbit stamp stuff and print off pictures.

As someone said above, best of all he is loving, and very involved dad who is adored by his kids.

I can't believe I care this much bout the Pigs!

MissRabbitLive · 08/01/2010 20:14

yes, his kids.

Right.

overmydeadbody · 08/01/2010 20:16

I thought it was Peppa pig?

Caz10 · 08/01/2010 21:07

It is Peppa!

I care very much about the pigs Theochris, you are not alone! Yes, Daddy Pig does have his buffoon moments, but I actually love him. He is never grumpy with his children and is always doing lovely spontaneous things with them, like taking them out in their jammies into the garden to watch the stars. He laughs at himself when he gets things wrong without going into a male strop, and he can ballroom dance, and he does the housework. I'd marry him if I could

Caz10 · 09/01/2010 14:03

cannot believe no-one else is going to step up for poor Daddy Pig...

MrsBadger · 09/01/2010 14:23

I like Daddy Pig

the fact he is present at all is quite refreshing tbh

Sassybeast · 09/01/2010 14:26

Daddy Pig is DHs hero - should I be concerned ? Book him into therapy ? Seriously OP - YABU and thinking way too much. Daddy Pig is a buffoon who makes kids giggle - I'm sure it's not going to turn little girls into men hating psychopaths with a superiority complex

bronze · 09/01/2010 14:27

He was a great dancer as well remember
