to think Pepper Pig is slightly sexist towards Daddy Pig?

Daddy Pig seems to fit many negative male stereotypes while Mummy Pig is always portrayed as the better of the two. Can this be a good thing for children to learn? It doesn't particularly offend me but just wondered if anyone else had noticed?

Everybody knows it's perfectly acceptable to present male characters as ignorant buffoons. Look at all those oh-so-hilarious men in ads who - chortle chortle, oh my sides - can't use a washing machine and tip the powder box upside down when reading the instructions...

Of course, this isn't "sexism". Oh, no. It isn't possible to be sexist towards men, because men are big nasty butch dominating types who are rough and tough enough to take it. Did you miss that memo?

stinkypinky · 09/01/2010 14:40

I am married to a Daddy Pig. I would not change him for the world.

IneedacleanerIamalazyslattern · 09/01/2010 14:42

UnquietDad they have based those washing machine ads on my buffon lovely dh
He does try bless him and will turn his hand to anything that needs done but he is bloody useless.

I actually like daddy pig but Peppa drives me up the wall, she is a cheeky little madam.
DS loves Peppa Pig and has been carrying his mr dinosaur around for months and I am convinced he is modelling himself on George.

IneedacleanerIamalazyslattern · 09/01/2010 14:42

(I mean useless around the house he is fantastic at many things...mind you noe of them are very practical..and don't get me started on DIY)

BadGardener · 09/01/2010 14:49

Peppa Pig is obnoxious, like all little girl characters on tv at the moment. Why can't someone do an animated Milly Molly Mandy?

bronze · 09/01/2010 14:56

because they would probably ruin it for us. Plus its frightfully sexist

Caz10 · 09/01/2010 14:58

Can't believe people don't like Peppa in general. I am in danger of putting DD off it acually as I really like it and keep putting on the DVDs!

BadGardener · 09/01/2010 14:59

true Bronze, they would probably try to update it and would have MMM's mother going out to work and Little Friend Susan on a skateboard.

foxinsocks · 09/01/2010 15:00

it's all because Daddy Pig snores.

Mummy Pig makes comments about it all the time but Daddy Pig takes no notice and just snorts.

This has built huge resentment in Mummy Pig who is now withholding sexual favours from Daddy Pig who is none the wiser despite all the clues that Mummy Pig is dropping.

I bet Mummy Pig is knackered too sleeping next to him for all these years.

All it takes is a simple trip to the doctors but he won't go.

NorkilyChallenged · 09/01/2010 15:01

Daddy Pig is an excellent musician, ballet and ballroom dancer, ice skater, painter, mathematician, diver. Plus he does most of hte cooking, vacuuming, playing with his children... just because he doesn't like DIY or fixing cars

BadGardener · 09/01/2010 15:03

I just love the fact that I can drive DH insane simply by saying in that annoying voice 'Oh Daddy Pig you are silly.'

LittleBugsMum · 09/01/2010 15:35

I do think Daddy Pig is portrayed as a bit rubbish sometimes but he's also very loving and sweet and is often seen as the fun one in the family when Mummy Pig is too busy.

I think it's a nice antidote to 'wait until your Daddy gets home' to sort everything out when Mummy can't. Daddy is often seen as swooping in to save the day and offering logic and wisdom where is was missing before. I'd take Daddy Pig over that any day of the week...

0karen · 05/12/2010 22:59

I just posted in Tell Addicts on the subject

The children are always telling daddy pig he is overweight and silly, is that right for a children's program

lady007pink · 05/12/2010 23:04

What's all this bumping up old threads???????

Blimey Unquietdad you need to stop watching so much children's TV and get down the pub for a few beers - you are taking things far too seriously!
I love Peppa Pig and so do my children.

TattytinsellooksDevine · 05/12/2010 23:07

I dont know.

He transmutes numbers for a job, whereas when Mummy pig is "working", she is on the computer at home, which is clearly mumsnetting something very complicated and highly profitable.

The time they break her computer, she calls Daddy pig to fix it and he tinkers round with it whilst she "finishes lunch". He does of course fix it then allows George Pig to play Happy Mrs Chicken, thus undermining her philosophy on delayed graficication.

I do love it when Susie Sheep and Peppa Pig ask Mrs Sheep whether she is working or playing today. She says she will be working hard at the gym. "Running, jumping, skipping". "that's not work, that's play" say Peppa and Susie.

portaloo · 06/12/2010 00:02

I love Peppa Pig. I don't find her particularly cheeky or obnoxious.

On the other hand, I can't stand Olivia the other pig programme

redskyatnight · 06/12/2010 09:31

In this morning's episode Daddy Pig made the picnic for the day's outing :)

I made particular note to tell my DH.

notremotelyintofootie · 06/12/2010 09:48

We love peppa pig too! Dd is only one but dances when she hears the music and has been fascinated by daddy pig for months! Dh watched it once and actually said "omg I AM daddy pig!" lol it's the 'I'm an expert at.... ' that does it for us and I agree re the snoring!!

Praline · 06/12/2010 10:53

Oh get a grip FFS!

ZephirineDrouhin · 06/12/2010 11:08

I've often suspected that Mummy Pig spends a bit too much time on MN when she's supposed to be working (projecting much?), but other than that I've always felt that they represent a sort of ideal family role model. Don't fathers always play the buffoon for their children?

Lovecat · 06/12/2010 11:27

I love Peppa Pig. I'm convinced it's written for adults rather than children, it's just too funny!

Am I alone in loving Brian Blessed being utterly useless as Grampy Rabbit in his lighthouse?
