to wish if people must put their children in the trolley not in the kidseat, they should at least make the child sit down?

hi, first post here, but have been following for a while and was just interested in other mums opinions on this!
I used to work in a [extremely well known] supermarket, and the rule is [which im sure it is at other places] is that if your child is too big for the childseat, then they shouldnt be in the trolley at all. because they are heavy moving...um, vehicles. [if you see what i mean?]
but, it was always the unwritten rule that if the child obviously needs to be contained in one place, they should sit down. during my time there we had three seperate times where kids fell out of the trolleys because they were standing up, jumping up and down in them, and climbing over the sides. we also had countless occassions where kids would grab on to shelves and pull them down, or injure another child by moving the trolley.
i witnessed one of these children falling out and hitting his head very hard on the hard floor, and had to be rushed to hospital. it was distressing for all involved, and a heavy reminder that trolleys are not play areas.
i was just wondering if anyone out there has had a bad experience on this? i suppose this is also a bit of a warning, a lot of the women in encountered seemed to think we were being health and safety nutty or just covering our own backs, but trolleys werent built for kids [ahem, unless they have childseats, obviously ]

Fraid I put my (then six yr old) DD in the 'shallow trolley' last Spring when her leg was in plaster - but definitely sitting down!

Never thought of that one actually. But I hate kids standing in trolleys anyway - that's where my food's going to go! OK so the food's mostly in packets, but I still think it's pretty yucky.

its nice to see that there are rational mums out there, usually staff get a mouthful of abuse for asking parents nicely to get their DC's to sit down. 'are you saying i dont know how to look after my child?' said one particularly aggressive woman.
umm...no, im not, im just alerting you to a basic safety issue that is obvious to anyone with half a brain, but you've overlooked/ignored completely...
Bellissima, thats actually a brilliant idea! people can be SO aggressive with trolleys, id definately want to be guarded with them if i was in plaster!
and i hate when people use the childseat trolleys too, there is no excuse for taking a child seated trolley than a normal one, because if it was busy enough that we had NO TROLLEYS LEFT [which is pretty much impossible] the child seat ones would go first! one woman took a double child seat trolley, then had the nerve to complain to the manager that we didnt have any shallow trolleys left [yet we had plenty of normal bigger ones??]

DH started DS's terrible habit of wanting to stand sit in the trolley and I was furious with him for it. He will not walk all around the supermarket without running off whining to be carried and now he won't sit in the blardy child seat either. Cheers DH.

I had 3 under 3 1/2 and shops don't do tripple trolleys so one had to go in trolley for a long time (but always sat down). I have to say I did get anoyed with being told not to do it (although I didn't shout) because when I did try to get ds1 to walk he was wacked round the head with a basket when a woman swang round and she didn't even notice she had done it! I wouldn't of worried about being warned that he needed to stay seated but the shops that say not at all just aren't considering that sometimes it is needed.

carrieboo75, i see what you mean here exactly. in our store i had a great bunch of colleagues, a lot of other mothers etc. and our policy was generally 'fine...except if you have a bratty kid who is jumping up and down and making noise and generally DOING MY HEAD IN'

once i came across a woman in an aisle who was holding a broken shoe in her hand, i asked her if she wanted any help and she said another woman had caught her shoe strap on her trolley and dragged her down the aisle, then shouted at her for not 'getting out of the way!'

I made this mistake just after youngest was born she was about a week old and my son was 14 months couldn't get him in the trolley at b&q with her in the sling and sat him in the trolley but at the checkout he tried to climb out and fell on to the floor and crashed to the floor never felt so scared or guilty in my life I now cringe when I see kids stood in trolleys.

I have 3 with asd, aged 3 4 and 6. I had to do an emergency shop yesterday and had to take all of them, including my 3 month old dd. I had no choice but to put two in a trolley. DD in a sling, 4 and 3 year old both in a trolley, and 6 year old with a harness. It was hell. But I did what I had to do. Yes they were all screaming and shouting too.
I suppose the staff thought they 'did their heads in'.
