As the weather was so bad yesterday, i invited a
lady from down our street to come over with her 2 DCs. She is quite religious and regular church goer. Her DCs are always pretty quiet and far more well behaved than mine. Anyway we got chatting, and she told me ,that they normally do as they are told (as mine are a real handful) and if they do misbehave " i get the slipper out" Is that not illegal these days?

Maybe she was joking?
A neighbour claimed her dc's were so well behaved cos she'd batter them senseless if they were naughty - of course she never would in a million years (and certainly wouldn't admit to it so openly if she did!)
I hope she's joking, anyway

Southwind · 07/01/2010 12:22

It depends how she said it, could she have been joking?

Northernlurker · 07/01/2010 12:22

Smacking and religion in one post

OnlyWantsOneFartleBerry · 07/01/2010 12:29

... I tell my DD (who is 3) that I'll get savage with her, and she laughs at me...

But I once said it to her infront of a friend, and my friend gasped and wispered, "do you beat her...."

LMAO

suzybsue · 07/01/2010 12:30

I do not think she was joking!
And had no intention of combining religion and smacking

My grandad used to threaten us with his slipper - he would never actually have done it though (although I didn't know that then!). The threat was enough!

ShinyAndNew · 07/01/2010 12:32

I think she was probably joking. I often tell my friend who is awe of me when I have sleep overs/babysit (she only has one very well behaved child) taht i just lock them all in the cuboard if they get out of hand.

Obviously my friend knows this is no true, but I do say it in serious tone, anyone who knew me less would possibly believe me.

I dopn't think anyone would admit to soemthing like that were it true.

DollyMessiter · 07/01/2010 12:35

I don't think getting slippers out is illegal these days is it?
Otherwise we'd all have to wear them when still in the box, and that would cause awful Health and Safety issues with stairs and wooden floors.

suzybsue · 07/01/2010 12:37

i am still not so sure, she was joking.

She is quite a serious person, and i agree others may say things, and not really mean them. In her case i do not think so.

Dolly!

pagwatch · 07/01/2010 12:38

Was she by any chance visiting from the 50's

suzybsue · 07/01/2010 12:39

Pag No. But she is in her 40`s.

Suzybsue, did you not have all this answered on a thread in May? Maybe Austinsmam and Ditavonbees and other familiar names on threads about hitting children, and stockings will be along to answer your thread soon.

ChickensHaveFrozenNuggets · 07/01/2010 12:40

My Dad used to say he'd pull our arm off and beat us with the soggy end. I still have both my upper limbs (and lower, by the way. He didn't substitute a leg)

mummyofexcitedprincesses · 07/01/2010 12:40

I often end phone calls (to friends) with 'right, I'm off to beat the kids with a big stick until they go to bed!' It isn't true (honest guv).

When my sister then made a similar threat (in jest) my DDs really believed her! She must be scarier than me.

If she did mean it, it is a worry, but unless you suspect abuse there is little you can do.

pagwatch · 07/01/2010 12:42

I am in my 40's. We are lovely parents.

I think you are probably taking something she said too seriously. I often tell people I lock DCs in the shed if they misbehave. Its just nonsense.
If the children seem fine they really probably are.

WhoIsAsking · 07/01/2010 12:44

It is illegal to show a child a slipper. Report her to SS right now.

pagwatch · 07/01/2010 12:45

Somone should post SS outside Clarks

50ftQueenie · 07/01/2010 12:46

Maybe she means one of those huge double slippers that confine the wearer to the sofa. Maybe she uses it as a control device...... http://www.celtic-sheepskin.co.uk/footwear/sheepskin-slippers/sheepskin-footmuff/ The Slipper!

50ftQueenie · 07/01/2010 12:47

Poo! Why did that go wrong? The Slipper

pagwatch · 07/01/2010 12:47

perhaps she wears these

misdee · 07/01/2010 12:50

i tell the girls i'll 'tan their backsides'

and i also tell them they will sleep ubnder the stairs like harry potter if they dont tidy their rooms.

never done either.

WhoIsAsking · 07/01/2010 12:51

Queenie, That thing is called a footMUFF. That's slipper abuse + paedophilia all wrapped up in one link.
