Just be yourself. You don't need to impress anyone, if they don't like you the way you are then they are not worth getting to know.

YABU, sounds like all the worries are in your head.

Concentrate on doing the job!

picmaestress · 02/01/2010 23:06

Give yourself some time. You'll probably gradually get a few new bits and pieces, and feel like you fit in better. I agree with the others that the job's the thing to focus on, but sometimes how you look can be important, it depends on the job.

(I feel your pain, though. I'm 35 too, and also surrounded by beauties in their twenties at work. I've figured out that topshop dresses and lots of eyeliner help me feel less out of place. Plus I got a fringe cut to hide my 'orrible frown lines.
Upshot is have been asked out by a 24 year old ;) Bit wrong, but yay!)

YABU to feel like the ugly duckling, as I bet you're not. But YANBU to want to fit in a bit.

I bet your colleagues also feel like ugly ducklings some of the time. Everyone does. For all you know, they may also be envying you for something (perhaps the lovely children, perhaps something else). Just get to know them on your own terms.

I started a new job recently, older than most of them. When I started I wasn't introduced to anyone as my boss was too busy, so I burst into the coffee room singing and introduced myself.

I'm now one of the team and feel like I've been there for ever.

They are also far far slimmer than me (at least half my size), but, I don't care, I am me, I am lovely, and I'm attractive, but, with the added curves.

YABU and YANBU - It can be difficult to fit in in a new place so YANB entirely unreasonable but do not underestimate your work colleagues. Just because they are younger does not mean that they will not be able to see you for the person you are. Good luck with your new job
