YANBU in theory, it shouldn't matter - but in practice these celebs know full well that the media would prefer to out them and make a big story out of it. Ultimately it's sad that anyone's sexuality should be newsworthy, but I guess if the public didn't show an interest the media wouldn't be so hungry for a story?

OK I'm a hypocrite - I just googled to see who you meant in the DM. Good-looking and intelligent woman, good for her. And shame on some of those comments on the DM website, only read the first page and got tired of the same old rubbish.

Sadly it is still tricky to be lesbian or gay in many of life's arenas. I suspect it's harder to be lesbian. Just think about it - esp in the media, women are judged on their attractiveness - to men. Being a lesbian .... blows it a bit. And think how many people don't like feminists, even now, because even we are perceived to be "anti-men". So lesbians cop for that, too.

P.S. - totally shallow, but she is indeed good-looking.

seriously, i think its absolutely irrelevant what someones sexuality is, why should it matter.

i did wonder if the gay rugby player felt self concious in the showers though - because us women will, on the whole, happily strip off in an all female environment - but would hastily cover up if a man walked in.

Given the level of celeb twaddle in the media (Has Posh lost 1 oz? Brittany wears terrible new outfit! etc), I think sexuality is always going to be newsworthy, as it's a fundamental part of who the person is.

for me, I think the big issue is why people still feel they need to be "in" in the first place. It's still a political issue, unfortunately, that goes beyond the usual interest in the doings of those in the public realm.
