FUCKING memoryfoam mattress topper piece of shit

So, DH has wanted a memoryfoam thingy for ages. I wanted a new mattress cos ours is knackered. Go shopping today for new mattress. DH persuades me that spending £160 on memoryfoam topper is THE RIGHT THING TO DO.

NO IT IS NOT. It is shit. Have just spent an hour an a half trying to get to sleep. It has made our already hard mattress feel like concrete that I have been submerged into. Every time I roll over my pyjmas get left in old position so I have become a tangled mess and have to get out of bed to stand up twist them back round again and then proceed to return to the rock hard surface.

And it makes the bed so bloody hot. It is like a sauna in there!

So I have finally given up any thoughts of sleeping in there. Moved to spare room but that stinks of cat piss cos our rancid pissing cat likes to make a point about the in-laws [hmmm] (were staying over festive season)

Have tried to unfurl the sofa bed downstairs but only succeeded in getting my fingers trapped in the mechanism, which remains firmly shut.

I know I should go and wake H and get him to take the shitty memoryfoam thingy off the bed. But I can't be bothered with the hassle and the argument that will ensue.

So, AIBU to book myself into the nice hotel round the corner. Go there now, get a lovely sleep in a big comfy bed all to myself, and leave DH to deal with the kids in the morning?

(P.S. Sorry for shouting. I am just a little - ok maybe a LOT - grumpy)

but would that include a mattress topper which is wrapped and on top of a sprung mattress?

I have to say I never get hotter on mine either. Mine is only a very thin topper though.

My baby always slept on his back when we co-slept, but incidently when he went into his crib at 6mo would only sleep on his front (and still does) so this was another risk I had to weigh up.

I have a memory foam topper over a rock hard orthopaedic mattress. Cos it was hot I put one of those ultra thick duvet type mattress toppers over the top of my memory foam topper (are you still with me). It is now like sinking into a cloud, I am like the princess and the pea on all my mattress toppers. I also sleep naked as it gets too warm and I dont end up strangled by my jim jams Please post again on any subject FANJOLINA as you are screamingly funny!

releasethehounds · 31/12/2009 22:46

Oh shit - I bought a topper for my Mom & Dad for Christmas, as she suffers with arthritis and he suffers with asthma (apparently dust mites can't live in memory foam) so I thought it would be beneficial for them both.

I'm still waiting for their verdict.

releasethehounds · 31/12/2009 22:56

And another thing - the topper I bought is ridged on one side. Does anyone know if you lie on the ridged side or the flat side, as the instructions didn't mention it.

VicarInaTinselTuTu · 31/12/2009 23:15

as promised this is mine

here

is v v v lovely!

VicarInaTinselTuTu · 31/12/2009 23:18

or here

this one says more and its in which!

here

read, and go buy! nothing has ever bested this one and we bounced on loads in the shops!

fanjolina · 01/01/2010 15:18

Thanks for the link Vicar

Beammeupscotty - your bed sounds like heaven . Even with the crappy memoryfoam stuff on. I loved my goose down topper. Think I will buy a new one.

Releasethehounds - you put the topper FLAT SIDE up....

....as we realised THIS was the major problem with ours. Stupid DH put it the wrong way round . So all the honeycomb cell like things had been grabbing bits of me and not letting me/my pyjamas go when I wanted to roll over! We have put it the proper way round now and it is much better. It will still take some getting used to, but no longer do I have visions of hell as being trapped in a memory foam topper.

Am a bit worried about the co-sleeping, but DC3 is 8 months now and mostly in her own room. And if it affects the sexual activity then DC4 unlikely to happen. (But don't tell DH that )

dont' have a topper but do have a memory foam mattress and I LOVE it! It's so comfy, never had a bit bother with it and we bought it 2 years ago now.

Sorry to OP who's having a rough time of it. Just get rid off it if you don't want to use it.

Earthstar · 01/01/2010 15:54

Everyone I know in RL who has a memory foam topper loves it...mine is flat both sides though. However they are definitely hotter to sleep on which is a disadvantage.

My joint problems have improved no end and my 10 year old loves hers too!

kittywise · 01/01/2010 15:56

Mine's great, makes a huge difference. I'd recommend anyone to buy one.

PurpleLostPrincess · 01/01/2010 16:41

Oh dear, I've only just discovered the world of mattress toppers as a friend asked us to order one on ebay through our account. So, we got one for Christmas for £50, it's 3 inches thick and we love it! I totally see where you're coming from as far as the pyjamas go but I just figured it would take some getting used to. Hope you find something comfortable for you - we're all different I guess!!

Btw, we have 'christened' ours a few times recently and found it to enhance our positions and comfort etc (we really went for it after 6wks without cos I had my giblets out lol!)

releasethehounds · 01/01/2010 22:23

Thanks for the advice - so they shouldn't be lying on the ridged side! I'll let them know....

OhYouBadBadKitten · 01/01/2010 22:36

I love our memory foam, with arthritis and raynauds its the perfect thing to sleep on. it snuggles me

mcflumpy · 01/01/2010 23:39

We have a memory foam topper and hate it too. We just ordered a new mattress yesterday as we haven't had a good nights sleep since we put this hideous thing on our bed. Similarly there are 2 us shaped ditches in the topper. Hate it hate it hate it....

liath · 01/01/2010 23:52

I quite fancy getting a memory foam mattress for my bad back but it would remind me too much of that bit from Nightmare on Elm St where Johnny Depp gets sucked down into his bed......

BiscuitStuffer · 09/01/2010 20:42

I think that there's nothing for it but to sleep in pjs made of the finest silk.

Irons · 10/01/2010 10:38

I love my new memory foam mattress

SleepTight · 14/01/2011 09:34

Hi everyone,

Like I was saying to some of the others on another discussion, it may be worth you going to www.zonesleep.co.uk and having a look there.

They've called it 'memory-fabric' and 3morphic or something like that and the materials let air circulate around you and you don't get hot.

I got one a couple of weeks ago and I'm really pleased, it's helped me no end, especially considering 'the change' has left me extremely hot and bothered on numerous occasions in the middle of the night...

Fanjolina on the first post said she paid £160 for hers, don't do it, fork out an extra £20 and have a Zonesleep one, I'll see if I can get the person who's got one from the other forum to back me up.

Hope I've helped

rattles · 14/01/2011 17:30

Hi Sleep tight

I can echo that. I tried memory foam and it is good but for the heat your own body generates.

I bought the zonesleep one even though it was expensive, cause frankly i'll try anything to sleep better and it's just as comfy but so much cooler. So I played about with all my purchases. You should try the memory fabric zonesleep thing on top of conventional memoryfoam - best of both worlds!!

pranma · 14/01/2011 17:37

We have used a memory foam topper for 5 years now.We absolutely love it for comfort,it has never felt hard at all and has sorted out my back ache, despite its tendency to 'walk' down the bed.The mattress needs replacing now so we have bought a whole new bed with memory foam layer in the mattress.I just hope its as comfy as the topper!!

PinkElephant73 · 14/01/2011 17:38

another memory foam dissenter here.

we slept on a memory foam mattress at PILs house.

it was unbearably soft - I sank so far into the mattress it was hard to turn over, and really hot.

no thanks!
