FUCKING memoryfoam mattress topper piece of shit

So, DH has wanted a memoryfoam thingy for ages. I wanted a new mattress cos ours is knackered. Go shopping today for new mattress. DH persuades me that spending £160 on memoryfoam topper is THE RIGHT THING TO DO.

NO IT IS NOT. It is shit. Have just spent an hour an a half trying to get to sleep. It has made our already hard mattress feel like concrete that I have been submerged into. Every time I roll over my pyjmas get left in old position so I have become a tangled mess and have to get out of bed to stand up twist them back round again and then proceed to return to the rock hard surface.

And it makes the bed so bloody hot. It is like a sauna in there!

So I have finally given up any thoughts of sleeping in there. Moved to spare room but that stinks of cat piss cos our rancid pissing cat likes to make a point about the in-laws [hmmm] (were staying over festive season)

Have tried to unfurl the sofa bed downstairs but only succeeded in getting my fingers trapped in the mechanism, which remains firmly shut.

I know I should go and wake H and get him to take the shitty memoryfoam thingy off the bed. But I can't be bothered with the hassle and the argument that will ensue.

So, AIBU to book myself into the nice hotel round the corner. Go there now, get a lovely sleep in a big comfy bed all to myself, and leave DH to deal with the kids in the morning?

(P.S. Sorry for shouting. I am just a little - ok maybe a LOT - grumpy)

You need to sleep with it for a couple of weeks to get used to it.

It took me a week to get used to my goose down feather topper and dh took the piss saying I was a princess

fanjolina · 31/12/2009 12:47

I loved my goose down topper. It was like sleeping on a cloud. Fell in love with it straight away.

Not sure I can survive a couple of weeks of crap sleep just to get used to the memoryfoam. Am back at work from Monday and wouldn't be able to function after a night like last night.

I really really love my memory foam topper it does go for walks down the bed but it has stopped my hip pain and back ache completely. It is a 2 inch thick one,the thinner ones are not so good.

fanjolina · 31/12/2009 12:58

Ours is thick too pranma - 3 inches. I think maybe too thick?

I think all this memory foam stuff is a nonsense.

biglips · 31/12/2009 14:41

weve got a 4ins memory foam mattress topper and its a bliss!! as our mattress was getting slightly abit too soft and our backs was starting to hurt us so hence thats why we got the topper. i dont have problems with my pjs either. The first night we slept on it was abit weird but it took us 2 nights to get used to it. but at the end of the day we cant live without it!

norfolkBRONZEturkey · 31/12/2009 14:48

Dont cosleep on it
theyre very dangerous for babies

jasper · 31/12/2009 14:54

I was going to buy a memory foam mattress but I forgot

TotallyAndUtterlyPaninied · 31/12/2009 15:04

You're going to hate me for this but... the toppers were on offer in Netto 2 weeks ago for £30 (double) and £40 (kingsize).

Spend the hotel money on a new mattress and if he wants to stick the topper on top he can do as you won't notice if you're fast asleep on your new comfy mattress.

fanjolina · 31/12/2009 15:14

lol at Jasper

Are they really dangerous for babies Bronze? God I am mad now if they are. I can live with not particularly liking something I bought. But I specifically asked about it and all I was told is that they can make you hotter so be careful about overheating the baby.

TUP - am liking your style. But hotel money is nowhere near what the new mattress costs.

We will end up with a new mattress. I am sure

norfolkBRONZEturkey · 31/12/2009 15:21

I remember reading about it. Makes sense with all the other surfaces babies shouldnt sleep on

ijustwanttoaskaquestion · 31/12/2009 16:01

definately not good for co sleeping, there is already the increased heat from the co sleeping, i dont think those memory foam mattresses breathe very well either - its a definate definate no no - might be a good idea to check up on FSIDs website for any advice, because then you have a perfect reason to take the bloody thing back and get a refund!

fanjolina · 31/12/2009 16:16

yes, ijustwanttoask. I will definitely try for a refund

I have a topper and love it, was just a cheapy though £50 for a king sized, makes my bed so cozy that we usually end up with all the dd's in with us, I hadn't heard the warnings of co sleeping on one and have been co sleeping for 14 months

LauraIngallsWilder · 31/12/2009 16:35

I have a cheap mattress topper from ikea which is rather good - I agree yours sounds awful though fanjolina

Definately NOT the right thing to do

PurpleEglu · 31/12/2009 16:39

When we were recently buying mattresses for the DSes I tried out a memory foam mattress. The lady in the shop said you either like them or don't.

We have a feather mattress topper. Ours is from QVC, it is Northen Nights and really good quality. I much prefer it to memory foam.

Lovecat · 31/12/2009 16:48

I've just spent 4 nights on a hotel bed that was proudly advertised as having a memory foam mattress.

Bag o' shite, to put it bluntly.

Never got so little sleep in my life as it felt like I'd set in concrete, and every time I tried to move my not inconsiderable bulk it felt like I was wrestling myself out of a hole...

And very, very hot and sweaty. Take it back.

fanjolina · 31/12/2009 17:32

Lovecat - that must have ruined your time away!

Would love to take it back but stupid Dreams Superstore (or whatever they are called) do not allow returns. Was going to buy some sheets from them yesterday too and tske home to check colour but they said they wouldn't even accept thosse being returned unopened

OP posts:
norfolkBRONZEturkey · 31/12/2009 17:38

well they should sell as they missold it
If they told you it was ok for cosleeping

smokinaces · 31/12/2009 17:53

I co-slept on my mattress topper norfolk and was told it was fine - & I also did a lot of googling too, and couldnt find any evidence of increased cot death etc, just to watch babies dont overheat (which I was anal about anyway)

ijustwanttoaskaquestion · 31/12/2009 18:14

found this which advises against co sleeping on memory foam - print it off, tell them to take it back.

I co slept with my baby, not on a memory foam bed, was very wary of over heating, if memory foam beds are hotter than normal matteresses i would have thought there would be incresed risk, but i dont know. The extra heat would put me off in the summer for myelf also.
