FUCKING memoryfoam mattress topper piece of shit

So, DH has wanted a memoryfoam thingy for ages. I wanted a new mattress cos ours is knackered. Go shopping today for new mattress. DH persuades me that spending £160 on memoryfoam topper is THE RIGHT THING TO DO.

NO IT IS NOT. It is shit. Have just spent an hour an a half trying to get to sleep. It has made our already hard mattress feel like concrete that I have been submerged into. Every time I roll over my pyjmas get left in old position so I have become a tangled mess and have to get out of bed to stand up twist them back round again and then proceed to return to the rock hard surface.

And it makes the bed so bloody hot. It is like a sauna in there!

So I have finally given up any thoughts of sleeping in there. Moved to spare room but that stinks of cat piss cos our rancid pissing cat likes to make a point about the in-laws [hmmm] (were staying over festive season)

Have tried to unfurl the sofa bed downstairs but only succeeded in getting my fingers trapped in the mechanism, which remains firmly shut.

I know I should go and wake H and get him to take the shitty memoryfoam thingy off the bed. But I can't be bothered with the hassle and the argument that will ensue.

So, AIBU to book myself into the nice hotel round the corner. Go there now, get a lovely sleep in a big comfy bed all to myself, and leave DH to deal with the kids in the morning?

(P.S. Sorry for shouting. I am just a little - ok maybe a LOT - grumpy)

I have got a silentight one and it is briliant (though will admit I didnt pay a lot-it cost a tenner in some ridiculous money off sale for a double size!) I havent had a problem with it at all, very comfy.

If it is annoying you, you could maybe try cutting or folding it in half so it isnt on your side of the bed-not sure if it will work but might be worth a try!

My kids have both got memeory foam mattresses, and I cant feel a difference between their mattresses and our topper to be honest!

saggyhairyarse · 31/12/2009 09:11

Can't stand memory foam either, it just feels horrid!

I've got a proper futon bed with reed mattress things and stuffed mattress and it is fab!

lisad123wantsherquoteinDM · 31/12/2009 09:15

I have a memoney foam topped mattress and a topper I love my bed I just sink into it, its bliss

HohohoBumperlicious · 31/12/2009 09:20

Hate memory foam - gives me the heebee geebies!

HohohoBumperlicious · 31/12/2009 09:26

Am loving the idea of a goose down topper though. I've just seen this one, worth it do you think?

fanjolina · 31/12/2009 09:26

Well I woke him up at 3am and got him to take it off the bed so I could get some sleep. As we were taking it off the bed I noticed that he had put it on upside down! Well, at least I think it was - though he was insisting it wasn't.

I am sure you are meant to have the flat side on the top? He had it with the bumpy side on the top.

SO I will give it another go. But if it is still shit I will have to think of some reason for the shop to HAVE to take it back. Cos I am not happy wasting that amount of money on something that makes me so grumpy and effects my sleeping, After 7 months of 3 hours sleep a night due to baby I NEED a god night's sleep.

now THAT is a proper thread title - I clicked immediatly

I have a proper mattress with a built in topper - very good but they do get a bit hot

AliBellandthe40jingles · 31/12/2009 09:49

I am pretty sure you sleep on the flat part, sounds weird.

I hate memory foam, we had it on our first mattress and I hated it. Now we have a lovely pocket sprung, wool upholstered mattress. It is very firm, which is what we both like, and fantastic. We got it on sale, I think the whole bed was £1200 which was the divan base and the mattress.

fanjolina · 31/12/2009 09:54

It is good to know that there are other memoryfoam haters out there. But it is also bad because it likely means that I will NEVER like this thing. Grr.

Just wish we hadn't spent so much on it. It isn't even worth ebaying, since you can get new ones on there for about 30 quid.

with regards to memory foam, beds or toppers - whenever i have tried them out in the shop i have found that its actually quite hard to move about on - the shop assistants smile patronisingly and say that that is one of their better features as they stop tossing and turning.

Thing is, i don't JUST sleep in my bed, there is a certain amount of tossing that goes on Actually, it is a serious question - does it make "relations" awkward? or do you have to do it on the sofa before you go to bed?

noddyholder · 31/12/2009 10:22

Keep the topper and ditch the pyjamas.

fanjolina · 31/12/2009 10:26

Ijust - it is impossible to move. I normally sleep curled uinto DH and I couldn't bloosy move on to my side. As soon as we ditched the topper I could cuddle him again. There is no way you could have an energetic multi-position sex session with it on.

noddy - I don't normally wear pyjamas, but I am poorly at the moment and always wear pyjamas when I feel sick. The mattress topper would be shit even if naked though.

thanks for this thread - we came seriously close to buying a memory foam mattress this week, but had to use the money to pay the mortgage instead It would seem the lord really does work in mysterious ways!

StealthPolarBear · 31/12/2009 10:34

what on earth is a mattress 'topper'?

nickelbabyjesus · 31/12/2009 10:41

SPB: it's a big thick bit of foam or "duvet" that ties onto your bed above the mattress. it means you can effectively have a new mattress without having to buy a whole mattress.

StealthPolarBear · 31/12/2009 10:49

oh
weird

StealthPolarBear · 31/12/2009 10:49

thanks

I've got the same type of mattress as MUTTletoe, and it's wonderful. I get really bad back pain, so it was wonderful from the first moment I got it. I almost fell asleep on it in the show room

TINKERBELLE33 · 31/12/2009 11:08

I have had a Tempur mattress for nearly 5 years now and wouldn't swap it for the world. It took about 2 months to get used to it but now I can't sleep on an ordinary mattress - holidays are a nightmare. As for 'relations' I have no complaints there, you just need to work a bit a harder as there is no rebound from springs!

Now is a good time to buy these as they are often greatly reduced, we saved nearly £500 and got free pillows, though I can't stand the pillows. Tempur were doing 60 night free trials so may be that could be a way of testing.

Milliways · 31/12/2009 11:13

My son suffered with back problems, and we bought him a SIlent Night individually coil sprung mattress with a built in memory foam top. He is in love with it! We all tried it & pronounced it the best mattress in the house (cost loads though), but he was actually able to sleep in it (had spent 2 months on the floor).

Separte toppers though, I can imagine they may not fit correctly.

PirateCatintheXmasHat · 31/12/2009 11:23

but what is good about memory foam. i just imagine that you have to get into bed in the same position every night, like Playing that Hole in the wall game!

Kaloki · 31/12/2009 11:25

It depends how much memory foam there is. mine is only a top layer, so you sink in enough to be comfortable - it supports my back perfectly. However I tried a 100% memory foam mattress and it was too soft.

fanjolina · 31/12/2009 11:28

MUTT - I have said I will give it another go. Especially if DH puts it on the right way round.

But I could not in any way possible get to sleep on it last night. And I needed to sleep. AM ill, have 3 young children to run around after in the day and am hosting a party tonight. I NEEDED sleep last night.

I will try it again. And hope it gets better. But I cannot take 2 months to adjust to it, like some people have.
