my brother's new dog has been given the same name as my son

I really don't know how to react but my mother has just told me about my brother's new dog, and how my nieces and nephew have given it the same name as my son, their cousin. I wouldn't give a dog the same name as my nephew - AIBU for being a bit about this? I feel a bit insulted, actually. We don't see eachother much, as we live in different countries, so I see it as them saying it doesn't really matter that the name is already "taken," since my son isn't a big presence of their lives (at least for now).

It is a bit odd. Not much you can actually do about it - I suppose as you're in different countries your DS doesn't seem "real" to his cousins. And you can't blame them for that, really. But it's still odd.

Morloth · 30/12/2009 20:10

We named the boy after the pony we had at the time. Does this actually matter?

domesticextremist · 30/12/2009 20:10

Its tricky cos my ds often wants to name random things after cousins because he looks up to them - could this be the case?

YABU really - tis only a name after all...

sanfairyann · 30/12/2009 20:11

yabu - they've asked the kids what to call it, they've thought of all the names of people they really like and thought of you and your children - thats the way kids minds work. our pet has the same name as one of our neices - she thinks it's cute

DuelingFanjo · 30/12/2009 20:12

it is odd but my husband's brother is named after a dog they had as children!

MmeLindt · 30/12/2009 20:15

A friend of ours had a dog who was called the same name as her brother. She had asked her DC what they wanted to call the puppy and they said Bruce.

So it was always, 'Bruce did ...'

'Bruce the dog or Bruce the uncle?'

It was a sign of affection.

thisisyesterday · 30/12/2009 20:15

i agree, i think the kids were allowed to choose and they chose that because they thought of him and liked him?

ds1 wants to call his dog his own name, and the fish, and his baby brother!

RainRainGoAway · 30/12/2009 20:16

Its a bit wierd. Not sure I would be happy unless I knew the context.

RainRainGoAway · 30/12/2009 20:16

And I think I would have asked you first before going ahead.

chandellina · 30/12/2009 20:16

I don't know if it is some sort of tribute, they do adore him though most of them have only met him once.

It just feels like he won't have a place in their family in his own right because the dog will be what that name represents.

My brother and sister used to have a hamster which they named after our cousin. This was years ago, and at the time, our cousin was a toddler.

We didn't get to see our cousin much because of distance, but I think my bro and sis named the hamster after her because it was an important name to name due to their love for our cousin, rather than saying that the little rodent reminded them of her!

I can see why you're a bit annoyed, I might be too, but don't get too annoyed as it was the children who named the dog, not your brother.

scottishmummy · 30/12/2009 20:25

fortunately no chance meeting will occur

if you were same social circle running into each other.brother shouting "Oi, Rexy/Spot/Bouncer come here then yes that would be awkward.but given you are in different countries and dont see each other it is odd but not a biggie

and hell name your gerbil after one of his dc if it really annoys

LynetteScavo · 30/12/2009 20:29

I think it's a complement...especially as they let the children choose.

At least you are not pg, and about to give your DS that name...that would be very annoying.

And ofcurse your DS will outlive the dog by many years.

You don;t have the monopoly on the name, you know

YABU

stressheaderic · 30/12/2009 20:33

Is it a dog's sort of name though?

Some boys names are a bit doggy I think (you don't have to reveal the name...)

chandellina · 30/12/2009 20:34

there's every chance we will be living near them within the lifespan of the dog. the way i see it, the dog will have lifelong status for all of them anyway, so that whenver that name is referred to, 30 years from now, it will bring to mind the dog.

i knew i shouldn't have named my son Spot.

(that is a joke.)
