my brother's new dog has been given the same name as my son

I really don't know how to react but my mother has just told me about my brother's new dog, and how my nieces and nephew have given it the same name as my son, their cousin. I wouldn't give a dog the same name as my nephew - AIBU for being a bit about this? I feel a bit insulted, actually. We don't see eachother much, as we live in different countries, so I see it as them saying it doesn't really matter that the name is already "taken," since my son isn't a big presence of their lives (at least for now).

their son is Jack, that's a nice dog's name too if we ever get around to getting a dog.

"It just feels like he won't have a place in their family in his own right because the dog will be what that name represents."

As long as you know this is borderline insane...

They've done it because they adore him. Take it as a compliment.

LilySwalLoosHerTurkeyBaster · 30/12/2009 20:39

Our dog has the same name as my sis (already had it when we got her)
so to even things out we called our rabbit the same name as my other sis!
Not sure it matters tbh , not enough to get worked up about anyway

i remember watching one of the birth/baby programmes on discovery home/health while preg with DD and a woman named one of her DTs after her (living) dog the dogs name was/is rocky...as is her son now THAT is weird

take it as a compliment as you obviously have good taste in names

chandellina · 30/12/2009 20:43

i retreat. I'll see what my brother says about it, since he hasn't actually told me about it yet. their last dog was named after his fraternity at university so I guess this is an improvement.

I would think it was sweet if this happened. Someone I know has a dog called Dave, I wonder if the same thing happened?

ijustwanttoaskaquestion · 30/12/2009 21:02

i guess it depends if your sons name is Fido or such like

ijustwanttoaskaquestion · 30/12/2009 21:04

ah, max - that is quite a common dogs name tbh, although it is a fine human name too i hasten to add.

My DD is called lucy and i am constantly coming across dogs called lucy

kalo12 · 30/12/2009 21:08

yanbu i would tell your brother that you are upset and ask him to change it. i think its very rude. i know the children chose it, and that is more than likely it is because they think fondly of their cousin, but your brother should have stepped in and said , no thats ... name, what about ....?

please say something. i'm sure it can be resolved.

scottishmummy · 30/12/2009 21:10

nah, dont ask to change names you will look really barking if you do that.can think of worse things family can do tbh

EdgarAleNPie · 30/12/2009 21:14

YABU. i am named after a dog and i don't mind.

SheikYerbouti · 30/12/2009 21:16

I love the name EdgarAleNPie

ilovesprouts · 30/12/2009 21:19

i know 3 dogs called max and a dog same as dd1 does not bother me YABU

kalo12 · 30/12/2009 21:21

i am shocked than so many people think this is ok. i think it's absolutely totally ill-manered.

scottishmummy · 30/12/2009 21:24

its no biggie.no one owns a name.for beast or bairn

EdgarAleNPie · 30/12/2009 21:26

that wasn't actually the name of the canine in question.

Sheikyerbouti would be a great name for a really pampered pekingese though (like Tricky Woo)

Horsiemummy · 30/12/2009 21:35

ok - try this

i meet my DH's EX girlfried in a pub just after our DS was born - she admits to looking me up on facebook (bit of a stalker imo)and is very chatty ( for someone who openly hated me a few years ago for stealing her boyfriend ). and in this chat she tells me about the new puppy she is getting and asks the name of the new baby.

so about a fortnight later i see her in the paper with her new puppy - which is called..... oh yeah! the same as our DS.

STALKER! - made my tummy go funny - strange girl.

Rainbowinthesky · 30/12/2009 21:41

yanbu

zippy539 · 30/12/2009 21:49

I think you are being a touch unreasonable. I would take it as it is probably meant - a huge compliment to your son and his name. I don't think there is any danger that your son's status is diminished in their eyes - quite the reverse.

sellthesizzle · 30/12/2009 21:51

My Nan called her dog the same name as my brother - it didn't occur to us to be offended!
