my brother's new dog has been given the same name as my son

I really don't know how to react but my mother has just told me about my brother's new dog, and how my nieces and nephew have given it the same name as my son, their cousin. I wouldn't give a dog the same name as my nephew - AIBU for being a bit about this? I feel a bit insulted, actually. We don't see eachother much, as we live in different countries, so I see it as them saying it doesn't really matter that the name is already "taken," since my son isn't a big presence of their lives (at least for now).

My brother once had a dog who had the same name as him

dmo · 30/12/2009 22:38

my mum named our dog after her sister and she loves her sister very much some people are just plain wierd

pinkmagic1 · 30/12/2009 22:56

We used to have a dog called Max, quite a common dogs name I believe and like others have said children often choose to name pets after people they like or look up to. However I can see why you would be upset and in a similar situation I personally would have helped my kids choose an alternative name.

Vallhala · 31/12/2009 00:01

My Lab is most offended that pinkmagic has just described his name as "common"!

Personally I wouldn't be in the least troubled by your DBs choice of name for his dog, especially as you say that its his children who suggested it. It may not have even occurred to the children that they were calling their dog after your lad as, okay I'll be honest, Max is a very common name for dogs. I'd see the point a little more, although still not to the extent of taking umbrage, if your DS was named something usually reserved solely for humans, such as Peter or John.

Pikelit · 31/12/2009 01:15

Reverse logic is needed. Call your next child Fido or Rover.

ChippingIn · 31/12/2009 01:40

Hmm - I don't think you are BU. I would be a bit peeved if one of my siblings named one of their pets the same as one of my children - it's ODD.

On the other hand, I come from a family where the oldest son has the same name for 5 generations and during that time they have named some of the pets the same name too (very human name too), but folk are weird!

I wouldn't do it myself and if it was my brother I'd be pi$$ed off, but then again, he'd do it with that sole purpose . If it was a friends children I would probably think it quite cute ... so maybe it just depends on the human relationship!

YABU!

IME, this is the highest compliment a child can pay you.

It might seem a bit odd, but there you go!

Milliways · 31/12/2009 11:18

When I was a toddler I named my rabbit after a TV character, only years later did I realise it was also my Gran's name (but as I only called her Gran I didn't know). She apparently thought it hilarious, and was glad I liked the name!

However, being a Mum of a newborn, I would probably feel a bit upset too.

FimBOW · 31/12/2009 11:19

My ds is calling his new rabbit the same name as his cousin's cat. Does that count

MamaLazarou · 31/12/2009 11:19

If I ever get a female dog, I will name it after my sister. She'll find it flattering or hilarious, but I can't imagine she'll be offended in the slightest!

Is the little boy called Rufus?

My cousin had a doll with hideous orange frizzy, knotty hair when she was little, and named it after me (my hair is very wild and curly and, at the time, red). I was annoyed at first, but soon got over that and thought it was sweet.

morningpaper · 31/12/2009 11:22

This depends on the name. If your DS is called Patch then it's fine. If he is called Raymond Withers The Second then they are Making A Point.

DD has the same name as the cat I had when I was wee. It's a good name - why not.

I don't think I'd be too impressed. There are whole threads on here about children's names, it's something very important to parents. I think the children's parents have allowed them to be insensitive to your feelings, they should have mentioned it to you out of courtesy.

poinsettydawg · 31/12/2009 14:34

I'd be annoyed.

thedogsgottago · 31/12/2009 14:40

Our dogs called Max and when DS2 came along DP wanted to call him Max.....needless to say it didnt happen, but all my dogs have got names that people are likely to have, (I didnt name them, they're rescue) and always feel slightly embarrassed when I meet someone who has the same name, or worse, their child has the same name.
I wouldnt be to miffed by it though, the kids are just naming after their cousin, cute really.

popsycal · 31/12/2009 14:50

i named all my teddy bears after one of my grandads

duckyfuzz · 31/12/2009 14:53

when dh first met my brother's then girlfriend, my sister's dogwas in the room. He got the names muddled up and called the gf by the dog's name. It turned out to be quite incisive of him

jasper · 31/12/2009 15:03
