"please don't buy me any toiletries, I've got loads" and you were bought toiletries by the person you said it to, instead of a very cheap item you really, really wanted - are you seriously telling me you wouldn't be a bit miffed ? Cos I don't believe you frankly

No, because first of all, I'd never tell someone something I don't want so I wouldn't b in that situation. If for some reason, I did tell someone "don't get me x..." (cannot imagine this) and then they got it for me anyway, I'd think there was some reason, like maybe the person had forgotten I said that or maybe they already had a stack of things they were going to give as gifts and that was one of them or maybe they just genuinely thought they were nice toiletries that I would enjoy... I would always be grateful for any gift and not think someone was being malicious about it. Not my place to make that judgement. Someone thought of me and bought me a gift they thought was nice and I would like. It's just how I was brought up. I don't do that.
