to not know if my wireless is secured?

I know its in the wrong place but I need a quick answer.

I've connected with WAP using a secured network key. But under connect to a network it says 'connected' but not 'secured'. Should it? I also changed the password on the Broadband wireless site.

Also a strange thing just happened, another network appeared - Belkin not secured, but has now disappeared, is this another wireless connection my laptop is picking up?

As you have needed to enter a network key, then it is secured, meaning that someone next door or in the street can't log into your WiFi connection.

Yes your laptop will pick up any WiFi networks in sight, so quite possible that it picks up another router somewhere in your local area.

thanks nannynick - I'm presuming the network key is the numbers/letters I've entered on the bottom of the router?

The other network that appeared is probably someone who lives near you who alsohas wireless broadband.

There should be a little icon in the bottom right of your screen you can click on that shows all the networks round your house in range incudng yours. Click on your network and set it as default.

Wow, isn't it clever!

Yes network key is the letters and numbers thingy (Think it's usually HEX - not that you need to know that!).

nannynick that's great, someone said I could test its secure with the DS or Wii - how???

Suppose you can test with any device that supports WiFi. Would need to use whatever software is on that device to look for available networks, it will detect your one and then show status/ask for key.

thanks. I can't do technology! Just went to broadband site and for some reason its not asking for my password now - aargh
