'She really struggled to get up the hill today'

'I put her into first and she nearly skidded through the kitchen window'

ITS A BLOODY CAR. NOT A SHE.

Anyway, all is good, I just won a jar of marmalade in the office xmas raffle.

IT's an old peeps thing. My dad always does it for cars, boats, ships (he was in the navy) etc.

I think it's quite endearing. There's a proper reason for it too but can't quite remember it...

enjoy your marmalade

pofarced · 23/12/2009 13:13

the proper reason is men use the female pronoun to describe objects they own and drive/sail, no? Rather strange when women buy into it.

Katiekitty · 23/12/2009 13:14

Not as bad as when people give their cars a name. Makes my teeth itch, that does.

Congratulations on the marmalade

DrNortherner · 23/12/2009 13:14

I thought the reason was an mysoginstic one - ie coined by men who see material possessions/things they own as female...

Quite happy to be corrected.

I worked with a woman 12 years ago who referred to her car as 'she' or 'her'. She was only about 32.

It was one of the (many) reasons I left that job!!!

PheasantPlucker · 23/12/2009 13:16

(Ie woman was about 32, not car!!)

pofarced · 23/12/2009 13:18

yes that was what i was trying to say DrN

InMyLittleHead · 23/12/2009 13:20

I don't understand who see cars as characters. A lot of my friends give theirs names although I do quite like Ted the red Nissan Micra

NoahAndTheWhale · 23/12/2009 13:21

My first car was called Fiona

Lemonylemon · 23/12/2009 13:26

It's a traditional thing, ships, boats and cars all being "she".

My car is "seamus" - just to be different...

MadreInglese · 23/12/2009 13:27

I do this but will now stop promptly!

DrNortherner · 23/12/2009 13:34

My car is called Bubbles. DD says it is a girl car.

ReindeerInaSkoda · 23/12/2009 14:10

I have a car. And she has a name

ImSoNotTelling · 23/12/2009 14:11

I name my cars based on the reg plate so I can remember it.

RainRainGoAway · 23/12/2009 14:13

I had a girl-car called Betty. She was awfully pretty.

My car now is a no-name boy.
