Angels do at least have some connection with the Nativity story. I don't think fairies come into it, even in pagan midwinter festivals.

angels may have announced the message but they didn't do it stood on top of a fir tree.

It was a fairy when I was a child, but I thougt it was supposed to be a representation of the Angel Gabriel(yes, I know he was a HE.

We have a Christmas chicken. He looks quite angelic though.
