Had it now for about 3 weeks, and it's really starting to drag me down, the gp even gave a course of antibiotics, but it's not helped, and nothing is relieving the pain either

gargle with soluble paracetamol

nickytwotimes · 21/12/2009 19:56

Sounds rotten.

Ask for blood tests to check for glandular fever, get a fbc, standard stuff just to check you over. Probably is viral but nevertheless, better to be checked.

famishedass · 21/12/2009 19:59

What do you mean, nothing is relieving the pain?

Surely paracetamol and ibuprofen do?

whoingodsnameami · 21/12/2009 20:02

Thanks, have tried the gardling, and lemon and honey, will have to go back to the docs I suppose. It's a strange kind of pain, it's very high up in my throat, almst I would say at the back of my nose, and it feels a bit like the pain you get there when you enhale water, I thought perhaps something is stuck there, but my glands have neen up too, so must be to do with the throat.

Famish, seriously, nothing is helping, not even a little bit.

go back to the doctor. Insist on a swab for Strep infection.

whoingodsnameami · 21/12/2009 20:05

Oh god, so many typos there, sorry

whoingodsnameami · 21/12/2009 20:06

Thanks RnB, I will, what is strep exactly? Have heard it before but never really knew what it is.

Yeah, go back to the gp. Get it sorted before christmas coz it'll be a right pain trying to see in medic in the holiday period.

Hope you feel better soon. Meanwhile, go get yourself the strongest paracetamol and profen you can buy and take paracetamol first, three hours later ibuprofen, 3 hours later paracetamol etc etc.

And suck ice-cubes to help numb the pain.

Northernlebkuchen · 21/12/2009 20:12

So it's really painful? This needs to be checked again - a standard sore throat would have gone by now. go back to the GP and get them to look deeper in to this - literally!

IMoveTheStarsForChristmas · 21/12/2009 20:14

Gargle with soluble aspirin

Warm some lemonade for 1 min in the microwave, and add some ribena. Feels kinda spiky when you drink it, but it helps a lot.

hope you feel better soon

whoingodsnameami · 21/12/2009 20:15

Thanks for the advice.

whoingodsnameami · 21/12/2009 20:16

Oooo, I have lemonade and ribena, will give that a go, thanks.

Northern, it is painful, though I have had worse sore throats, the level of pain changes through the day, yesterday it went completely for the first time, but came back about 3 hours later. Oddly drinking and eating is'nt extra painful like it normally is with a throat infection, so thats something to be thankful for.

That sounds awful! I wonder if some membranes at the back of your nose might be the problem, rather than your throat. Def worth going back to the docs.

jalopy · 21/12/2009 20:27

Are you sure it's not a sinus related problem or a post nasal drip?

whoingodsnameami · 21/12/2009 20:31

I was starting to wonder if infact it might be a nose problem, but like I said my glands have been up, though they are slightly less swollen today. Perhaps it's a combination of both. Thursday just gone, Friday I was very ill, fever, achy bones, could'nt stay awake, I thought I had flu, but recovered pretty quickly (except for the throat) and did'nt have a runny nose, is a runny nose always present with flu?

OP posts:
nickytwotimes · 21/12/2009 20:37

No, you don 't always get a runny nose with flu. Flu isn't all that much like a cold really - much more in the body iyswim? Not so much snot usually. Bad cough, etc.

I'd push for and ENT appointment.

Can you take codeine at all?

whoingodsnameami · 21/12/2009 20:39

Yes,I have had codeine before. I will call the docs in the morning, see if thy ca fit me in before christmas.

Please book an emergency appointment tomorrow. Insist on the Strep swab (this is a bacteria). I don't wish to alarm you at all but I will tell you about what happened to my brother, a really bad sore throat should always be properly checked out...

He had a terrible throat, had tried everyting to help it and got no relief. Eventually he went to the doc who said he had swine flu and gave him Tamiflu. Told him to expect to feel really bad for the nest few days.

So he took himself to bed, took the Tamiflu. He began vomitting and became extremely dehydrated. Eventually a friend found him and took him straight to A&E (he was throwing up blood by this point). He had kidney and liver failure and his blood results were all over the place.

They didn't know what on earth was wrong with him, but didn't expect him to survive . Thank god he did but he was in intensive care for nearly 4 weeks. He's 38 and fit normally.

They discovered that it all started with a Strep Throat infection. Because it went untreated spread and caused Systemic Toxic Shock

I'm really not trying to be alarmist here, and what happened to my brother is rare ( a handful of cases a year) but please, please just get it crossed off the list of possibilities.

Let us know what the doc said dx

whoingodsnameami · 21/12/2009 21:16

Blimey RnB, glad your brother is well now, I will go to the docs.
