to think that Xmas cards are a bit pointless?

Am I the only one who finds the mad rush to send everyone a Xmas card a bit pointless?

I just think that many of them end up thrown off within 10 minutes of opening (well, at least that's what happens to them when they reach me!). What a waste of paper, money and time spent at the post office sending them off.

I particularly loathe those with a word 'special' eg. 'for special one', 'for special daughter' etc etc. They are uber-insincere to me and sound like an attempt to hide the fact that the sender perhaps was less than thoughtful in the course of the year and is trying to make up for that.

Another dislike of mine are those with extensive sentimental poems on them. It's just a card fgs, I can't imagine someone dwelling on the 'meaningfullness' of those poems for longer than 5 seconds!

Oh, and they seem to be getting bigger and bigger each year! And they are absolutely horrendous, those oversized ones! What a pile of tat! I would be absolutely gobsmacked if my DP would ever give me one of those. To me, the bigger the card, the cheesier and less sincere the sender... (don't mean to offend those who received one of those XXXL-ones... )

So AIBU finding the whole preoccupation with the Xmas cards fatuous?

YANBU
I gave up sending cards years ago.

Made Christmas much simpler

I haven't sent xmas cards for about 4 years now. Out of the hundreds I used to send, only about 3 people have actually noticed.

It has made xmas a lot less stressy.

Well I like them!!!

yanbu.

and most of the time they only sign their name. yes, cheers for that. no newsletter / photos. why bother? i'd really rather not get anything. make an effort and personalize it at least.

YABU, I like getting cards. It shows that the person has actually sat down and thought about you. I tend to think people that don't send them are a bit miserable and not getting into the spirit.

I am very much in the Christmas spirit and not in the least miserable, but that is a reason I dislike cards - people attach unnecessary importance to them and read things into it if you don't send them
