to think that the saying 'the price of a loaf of bread' is a bit pointless now a days?

I mean lets face it it varies hugely!

Wouldn't it be better to update the saying to something a little bit more regulated?

Like the cost of,

LOL!! That's amused me. There's all sorts of odd phrases like that that make me laugh. Such as ' What's the price of fish (Or cabbage)got to do with anything?' Never got that one I must admit.

I say to my kids 'Shut up you sound like a broken record' and they are puzzled. Even if I said you 'sound like a stuck CD' I would probably get a bewildered look because a they really know is downloads!!

oooh good point about the stuck record - I hadn't thought about that! One more thing for me to pointlessly muse over

Interesting you should say that... In a job interview I got asked to estimate the value of the annual bread market of the UK. Had to average out the posh hand-shaped with seeds etc and the value stuff, and say how much I think each man woman and child got through. Rather amusingly the guy interviewing said that half his interviewees (for a graduate milkround job) actually had no idea how much bread cost because they never bought it themselves

a mars bar .
My dad is always working out inflation etc by the price of how many mars bars you could have got for a day's wage etc.

There is the Big Mac index wiki.

The price of half a lager is a good indicator of how things have changed. When me and mates started going out way back sometime in the last ice age it was 35p a half, 38p if you wanted 'black' When we were really skint we went without blackcurrent!!

Buddleja · 18/12/2009 19:30

35p for a half - wow!! When I was still living the the UK I recall half a pint of larger was 95p (stella was more - but can't recall the price of that cause no one seemed to get a half of it)

You know I've no idea how much either a Big Mac is (neither on it's own nor as a meal) nor do I know how much a Mars bar is!! I think it's 95c - but i could be way off!!
