OK, maybe there's a good reason but surely SOMEONE in the school would know where she was and I should not be expected to wander around knocking on all the classroom doors trying to find her?

As a teacher I would say that's is unacceptable and yanbu!
Although there could have been done dirt if behaviour type crisis she was dealing with and no one wanted to explain that one yo you bt then I wouldn't have thought they'd let you wander around. Especially as everyone who sets foot in our school needs a crb check !!!
