Winterval is (I thought) a wishy-washy PC-gone-mad way of saying Christmas without offending anyone who isn't a Christian and may have some other winter festival. It was around a few years ago and I even got Happy Winterval in a few xmas cards. Like Americans saying Happy Holidays.

Oh in fact it turns out it was made up by Birmingham City Council! here

Ha! That fits in with Birmingham University (or perhaps it was the old Poly, not sure what it's called now) forgetting to include Christmas and Easter in their student calendars a few years ago. They named all other religious festivals, but the Christian ones were demoted to "Holidays".

Winterval is a really good much-needed word, which would cover that feeling everybody gets around about NOW that it is pointless to commence any job or task which isn't directly related to CRIMBO.

Everything non crimbo-related is suspended for the winterval.
