What the bleeding H is "Crimbo"? I've never heard of it in my life. Ahh...upon reading the posts I assume it's some God-awful shortened version of Christmas.

Ew...my Anglophilia has taken a hit, I must say.

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 15/12/2009 16:23

The X in Xmas represents the "ch" of "Christ" or "Christos"; it's the Greek letter.

doggiesayswoof · 15/12/2009 16:23

Nobody uses it though. I have never heard another human being say it ever (except in the context of "I hate it when people say 'crimbo'" of course)

Do people say it in your neck of the woods then?

juneybean · 15/12/2009 16:26

It's such a young persons thing to say, I remember using that when I was about 14, and it's solely british lol.

GrimmaTheNome · 15/12/2009 16:28

OldLady, I know thats what the xtians like to think but its not what I mean by it

Perhaps I shall try using 'Yule' instead - traditional and not cumbersome,

SerenityNowAKABleh · 15/12/2009 16:28

I thought it was Australian? I use xmas all the time, so there.

Agree Hubby should go to the wall. Have hated it my whole life.

GrimmaTheNome · 15/12/2009 16:29

I think I've only heard it said aloud by my older brother who's in his 50s

Bleatblurt · 15/12/2009 16:32

I've only ever heard it said on Brookside.

GrimmaTheNome · 15/12/2009 16:36

Working for an American company, my own pet aversion is 'Happy Holidays'. Its just too bland.

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 15/12/2009 16:37

The X = "Ch" thing was taught to me by my Greek teacher. I am not an xtian.

CupOChristmasCheerfulYank · 15/12/2009 16:38

Well dammit, Grimma, you just can't have it both ways! When we say "Happy Holidays", we're trying to appease such hardened atheists as yourself, y'see.

I used to say it, and knock myself out trying to say Happy Hanukkah/Kwanzaa to everyone just in case. But now I just say Merry Christmas, because that's what I'm celebrating.

AllFallDown · 15/12/2009 16:39

Chrimbo, Glasto - any o-related abbreviation, frankly. I'll shoot em all with my pisto.

SerenityNowAKABleh · 15/12/2009 16:43

As a non-xn I do find it annoying constantly being asked "what are you doing for xmas?" etc., from people who know that I don't celebrate it.

I think that we should all just give up and celebrate Festivus - the festival for the rest of us.

Kaloki · 15/12/2009 16:46

Just wondering if the good citizens of Bristol say Crimbol and Glastol?

CupOChristmasCheerfulYank · 15/12/2009 17:18

What's Glasto? Soooo confused...

ThumbleBells · 15/12/2009 17:23

Glasto = Glastonbury

I like Crimbo, with or without the h (Chrimbo) but can't stand Xmas.(ech!)

Also hate things like preggers, hubby as well.

Pikelit · 15/12/2009 17:54

"i haven't heard that in years"

I think you mean "yonks".

IMoveTheStarsForNoOne · 15/12/2009 17:56

YANBU.. makes me think of Noel Edmonds, which is enough of a reason to execute someone, frankly.

ThumbleBells - agree about Glasto too (twitch)

bibbitybobbitysantahat · 15/12/2009 18:29

This is the worst Mumsnet post I can imagine

"Hiya

Scorpette · 15/12/2009 18:30

@BrianGiggs - so you won't be singing this on the 25th, then?

LukaSweetBabyJesus · 15/12/2009 18:32

Oi, there are valid reasons for using the word xmas.......so that your nickname can fit in the thingamy properly when you post.

Would ximbo be a compromise?
