This is going to be an AIBU by stealth, isn't it

Openbook · 14/12/2009 16:26

There's a lot you're not telling us here!

SaintNickKnack · 14/12/2009 16:27

I'm going to take a chance and say UABU

TheShowMustGoOn · 14/12/2009 16:28

Okay I was woken up by noise so half awake and shattered - looked through the shutters and saw smoke and flashes of orange.

We have buildings attached to our flat and I was certain one was on fire.

OP posts:
gingernutlover · 14/12/2009 16:32

so what was happening?

TheShowMustGoOn · 14/12/2009 16:33

We were standing in the street shoeless when a lovely binman asked if we were alright (it was orange lights from their van) Oh I was mortified

Then when I went to the back saw it was the condesing pipe from our own bloody house that was causing the 'smoke'

ThingumyandBob · 14/12/2009 16:43

Better to do than then be telling the firemen afterwards?.?well, I could have run for the door?.but I didn?t want to over react!?

purpleturtle · 14/12/2009 16:44

A bin lorry? At 3am?
Are they on overtime?

TheShowMustGoOn · 14/12/2009 16:45

Very true!

I applied to be a fireman recently so I think all that is still in my head.

TheShowMustGoOn · 14/12/2009 16:46

YANBU but that really did make me laugh!

CremeDeMenthe · 14/12/2009 17:34

YANBU
Consider it a trial run, just in case (God forbid!)
Do other people have an escape plan? Or is it just me?

MrsMellowdrummer · 14/12/2009 17:37

I did similar once (although didn't quite make it out of the house luckily)...

Turned out it was just a particularly beautiful and golden morning sunrise streaming in through the window and reflecting around the room.

Probably the most terrifying 20 secs or so of my life!

PeedOffWithNits · 14/12/2009 17:40

not just you CDM, we have an escape plan - DSs bedroom window looks over the flat roof of the porch (which is the size of a box room) woe betide DH if I find he has locked it and taken the key away! - it has a special hook, and there it must stay!

glad was a false alarm OP ! better safe than sorry!

famishedass · 14/12/2009 17:58

YANBU - you did the right thing. Better to be over cautious than not to be cautious enough.

Bet you felt like a tit though

TrinityReindeer · 14/12/2009 18:03

I've asked for a free fire saftey check frm the fire service in our town
I want to get an escape ladder attached to my bedroom window

FabIsGettingReadyForChristmas · 14/12/2009 18:08

I do too Trinity but DH won't let me. We do have a plan for who gets which child though.

MrsSantaChemist · 14/12/2009 18:16

YANBU it's better to be safe then sorry.

As an aside, is anyone else's fire plan very similar to their zombie plan?
Mine is, except the bit about getting to the TA base. I probably won't need to go to the TA base in the event of a fire.

fernie3 · 14/12/2009 19:09

well its better safe than sorry, we have a plan that involves my husband getting the two youngest and ill take the two oldest either downstairs to the front door OR out onto the flat roof on the middle floor. If we got stuck on the top floor we would have to hope someone with a really tall ladder was nearby. This is one of the reasons we are moving soon!
