In thinking that dd should get a little praise from school.....?

My dd is 5yo, and has got 10/10 in her spellings for 9 weeks running, yet every week i ask her "Did your teacher say well done?" and i get a no...

Would it be such a big thing to recognise her hard work? (we practice every school night) and praise her for this, or give house points or something???

Also just wanted to point out, we are not talking easy words, she has had things like chaffinch and Wednesday, which i think are quite difficult for a 5 yo.

she may not remember? although DD did something fab last week and the star of the week in her class got it for 'telling the other children not to run in the classroom'

bruffin · 13/12/2009 22:58

Didn't she get a sticker or a stamp or something in her book?

saadia · 13/12/2009 22:59

Are you sure she is not being praised? Children, through no fault of their own, are not always the most reliable at relaying information. I would be very surprised if they were not at the very least given a sticker or something for doing well.

Sherby...That doesn't surprise me

I always make a big deal of it, but i just think the school should also make some sort of recognition too, am not being all precious i would think the same of any child.

My dd gets a sweet for getting 10/10 in her spellings. She generally gets one even if she doesn't get full marks. I think she is the teachers favourite child.
YANBU to think that your dd should get a recognition for her efforts. OT, why would a child of that age need to know chaffinch?

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 14/12/2009 08:08

They should get some sort of recognition. The ds's get merit stickers if they get them all correct and a certificate when they get to 50 then 100 merit stickers.

Obviously they don't just get them for spellings but other good work aswell.

Don't even get me started on the ridiculous words they are expected to spell. DS2 who's 5 had challenge, champion and because the other week. I had to explain what the first 2 meant! The worst of it was his brother who is nearly 2 years older had the same spellings

pucca · 14/12/2009 08:59

Kreecher....I have no idea why a 5 yr old would need to know chaffinch she has had other bizarre words too but i can't remember off the top of my head.

Doyouthink....Exactly, i am not saying certificates or anything just house points or whatever such as stickers in your ds's school, just something. That is weird that they got the same spellings! I think giving 5yo such hard spellings is setting them up for a fall, and a knock to their confidence if they get them wrong. Not fair imo.
