To cry about what DS just did?

DS1 (11) was in town with DH buying Christmas presents. They passed by a homeless guy and DS dragged DH into the nearest shop, bought him the biggest thickest jumper he could find (with his own meagre pocket money he had saved) and gave the man the present!

After realising that the bag wasn't a trick ( makes me wonder what nasty things other people have done), and DH explaining that DS just wanted to give him a present, he was so happy

I am so proud of him!

It was all his own idea, and we really are stingy with his pocket money so it wasn't a small amount to him.

so I cried. And I don't do crying over soppy things. So... AIBU?

it's okay.
thankfully i have tissues behind the desk

if i were the real saintnickelas (st nicholas) then i would say your DS would get everything on his list this year!
as it is, i can't.

ChatterClausIsComingToTown · 14/12/2009 14:34

Fabulous, what a lovely little chap. I reckon a big bar of chocolate might be in order .

Buddleja · 14/12/2009 14:38

Oh wow - what a wonderful son. if I can even instill half his values in my sons I'd be a proud mammy

HowTheGibbonStoleChristmas · 14/12/2009 14:59

How wonderful, sweet and kind!

What a fantastic son you have

YouKnowStuffingIsForLunch · 14/12/2009 16:13

I never thought I'd be the type of person to start a "You'll never guess what DS just did?"-type-thread. But we're so proud!

Tell your DS he's inspired me to do a good deed. I've just looked up the details for my local homeless shelter, and they have a wishlist of bits they need. I'm going to go out tomorrow and buy them a few things.
I hope my DS turns out as lovely as yours.

YouKnowStuffingIsForLunch · 14/12/2009 16:39

Anathema that has made him

It's so nice to hear that his one act of thoughtfulness is leading to so many more.

How lovely, OP, you must be very proud of your son. What a super little boy.

GinaFB · 14/12/2009 17:02

That is one of the most wonderful things I have heard this year. What a lovely child!

It is great to know that there are selfless people out there - and even more moving that it is a child....

fillybuster · 14/12/2009 17:07

I've got tears rolling down my face...that's honestly the nicest thing I've heard all day - what a wonderful ds you have....

hohoholepew · 14/12/2009 17:07

How lovely

YouKnowStuffingIsForLunch · 14/12/2009 17:10

I might have to go and tell him off for making so many people cry

TotallyAndUtterlyPaninied · 14/12/2009 17:28

Aw what a lovely boy, show him this thread- everyone thinks he's great. How selfless.

Buddleja · 14/12/2009 18:35

AnathemaDevice just seen your post, if you haven't already got something my mum was told last year that the one thing that they never have enough of is sugar. Apparently allot of the men that come it take loads of sugar in there tea (not sure why this is - my mum told me but I've forgotten)

Might be worth checking out what the shelter near you runs low on

I'm ashamed to say that I wasn't inspired by the thread to do something myself, and I should have been, but now that AnathemaDevice posted that she was I finally realised that I could do something too so I'm checking out what I can do in my local area

YouKnowStuffingIsForLunch · 14/12/2009 19:00

Fantastic, Bud

Totally I already have and he [fblushed] a lovely shade, I think he's feeling very (deservedly) pleased with himself.

I work in a day centre for the homeless and am constantly astounded by the generosity of people. We are underfunded by £130,000 a year and yet have donations sent every day, or people calling to ask if they can fundraise for us. We have more clothes than we need sometimes and things like toiletries or food given all the time. I had no idea until I started there what the reality of homelessness is, how we are all a day away from it ourselves, and my outlook, in fact my whole way of thinking has changed beyond recognition. We open on xmas day and have had to turn volnteers who want to help away this year. We are not such a selfish society sometimes, and actions like your sons are inspiring

coolma · 14/12/2009 19:11

Just noticed that scottishmummy mentioned that the Big Issue is £2. That's only over xmas, it's normally £1.40. the vendors buy it for 70p and keep the profits

YouKnowStuffingIsForLunch · 14/12/2009 19:16

coolma, That is so good to hear. There's so much doom and gloom around, to know that there is also still such generosity and selflessness too is heart-warming.

I am full of Christmas spirit right now!

OP posts:
Earthstar · 14/12/2009 19:18

you must be very proud, that is what christmas is about

MrsStig · 15/12/2009 22:19

Well, because of this thread I bought the Big Issue. It was very interesting.

DH tells me the seller will now hound me every time I walk past to buy another, as that's what's happened to him.

YouKnowStuffingIsForLunch · 16/12/2009 13:40

ES, we are

MrsS that's great news. Ignore your DH! You can always say "No thanks" - that tends to work.

A one of charitable action is better than no action at all IMO
