e.g. by PILs. I realise it's just something people say without thinking. But am I alone in thinking this sounds a bit patronising? C'mon, he's not a dog!

Oh I love getting all annoyed over nothing :-)

IL's tend to use all kinds of strange phrases, however 'good boy' is pretty OK IMO.

If they are being kind and considerate towards him, I would just let it go tbh.

My PIL call DS things like 'ruffian' and 'hogbin' (sp?), but it's all said very affectionately and they are incredibly good with him so although they aren't names I would use, I just let it go.

Different generations and all that.

i call both my DS good boy , I also tell them to 'heel' and 'come' when they dawdle along on the way to school

Boys are like dogs - they need plenlty of exercise and good handling -

CaptainUnderPants I did once, on reaching the kerb, tell dds to sit. unsuprisingly they ignored me. clearly I'm doing something wrong. perhaps I need to give them a meaty treat every time I say good girl

I quite frequently get DS and the dog mixed up while out and about, which is doubly confusing as DS (3) has very long hair and the dog's a girl.
However, they both respond well to praise, regardless of the gender/species it's aimed at.
Echoing another poster, praise is praise, innit?

YANBU.

I do sometimes say 'good girl' to DD, but tbh I think it's something I've picked up from her (lovely and fantastic) childminder who says it quite a bit.

On the whole though I'm not at all crazy about the term. I avoid words like 'bad' and 'naughty' like the plague.

Like swottybetter, I know this probably makes me a tosser in many people's eyes, but that's just my way.
