I think quite a few European countries have laws that forbid children being named in ways that are too unusual or could be seen as 'undignified'. Generally you have to prove that the name already exists as a person's name, and not as a bus stop or phone company. It also has to be the 'right' gender, so you couldn't call a girl Gareth, for instance (wasn't there that one solicitor...?).

I do think that's too much intrusion on people's personal choices (one friend wanted to call her son Philip Max, and the registrar insisted that Max Philip would go better with their surname. So they changed it round!), but if it prevents some of the silliness mentioned here, it's not such a bad thing.

MaggieNollaig · 11/12/2009 12:36

My friend had a bf years ago called Garnet. Like the red semi-precious stone... His parents thought it was welsh for Gareth I think. Some people - you gotta wonder should they be pro-creating..

BUt the funny thing was, he seemed a real Garnet. He was a bit of a captain flasheart it seemed to suit him well. he was no David.

McSnail · 11/12/2009 15:25

Oo, I quite like Garnet for a boy!

Anyway - if wee Kayleigh (sorry, Klee) grows up and becomes really interested in Post Impressionist painting, she can always claim to be named after Paul Klee, the painter....

Yeah. That's pretty naff.

slopes off

GoodKingWhatFreshHellLookedOut · 11/12/2009 15:34

Our registrar told us the weirdest one she'd had was a boy called Johhhn. (No, I haven't pressed too hard on the h key!)

She queried it and they said they didn't want him to have the same name as any other Johns in his class at school.

Um, surely two h's would have done the job!

Yes, BlauerWeihnachstEngel. When we registered our DC's births in Germany we went armed with our book of Celtic Baby Names in case there was trouble. I was slightly deflated when our names were accepted without question.

No idea if they do that in UK, but it is certainly possible to register a name consisting of just initials. I remember seeing TJ on the Scottish baby names register.

LouIsAWeetbixKid · 11/12/2009 15:49

I know two brothers. Neil and Wayne. Not so bad until you find out their last name is Kerr. Poor Wayne.

Jux · 11/12/2009 16:21

Perhaps they were just taking the p'ee

Fizzylemonade · 11/12/2009 16:57

I swear I was in a doctor's waiting room 2 weeks ago and a woman with 2 little girls who were running about shouted "Strawberry come back here" we were wondering what the other one was called when the nurse came out and shouted "Champagne Smith"

My mate said "well, if your surname is Smith maybe you have to think outside the box"

In those books by that School inspector he says there was a Paige Turner

nannynobnobs · 11/12/2009 17:03

My dad's cousin, Ms Love, got together with a Mr Bird (and yes, he was called Dicky, whether it was real or nickname I never found out). When they had children, the girl was Tiger Love- Bird and the boy was Jaguar Love- Bird.

chegirlwithbellson · 11/12/2009 19:49

I am having Asa for one of DC's 5 names (my DCs have lots and as this will be my last I am going to cram as many in as possible )

I was booking a gentleman into A&E years ago. His next of kin was with him and her name was the most wonderful I have every heard

Merlin Hollywood.

Beautiful. I am not sure where she was from but she looked she came from the Seychelles maybe.

GerbilMeasles · 11/12/2009 21:05

amysaidno · 11/12/2009 21:33

I went travelling in Africa when I was a youngster and I met a "Godface". Also at work there was some one called Rocky, surname Mountain... his brother was called Cliff... unbelievable.

ArizonaBarker · 11/12/2009 21:37

DP used to know a Peter Phile, which is quite unfortunate, I think.

I know two little girls called Ruby and Millie.

nowwhatdoido · 11/12/2009 21:49

I knew a Pearl Jewel. That was her married name though.

Chuffinnora · 11/12/2009 22:04

I know a Richard Soles.

I wonder if his parents wonder, when he's in court for petty offences every 10 mins, where they went wrong with him?

Miggsie · 11/12/2009 22:13

I was in America and met Randy Hand...

eatsshootsleaves · 11/12/2009 22:14

I worked for an examination board during breaks from uni and one of my duties was to go through candidate registration forms. I came across a "Hugh Janus" and "Strawberry Fields Forever"

YorkshireRose · 11/12/2009 22:26

My sister went to school with Flash Gordon and James Bond - those were on their birth certificates.

trellism · 11/12/2009 22:38

I wanted to call dd Strawberry but dh wouldn't let me. The registrar also would not let me call her Ms Grumpyknickers (I did ask).

canihaveapeeinpeacepleasebob · 11/12/2009 22:56

When i worked at a hospital a nurse told me about a family with a son called Guy, when the nurse shouted his name to come into the clinic, no one answered.
So the nurse went back in and told the doctor the child wasn't there.
The doctor told him to go back out and shout gooey, so he did and the family stood up and brought the child in for his appointment!!

fanjolina · 11/12/2009 23:33

I know a Keight

Earthymama · 11/12/2009 23:45

Strawberry Fields Forever was at uni in wales when I worked in the library there.
She could have chosen Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds as she was VERY unwordly, well, this world anyway!1

Bless!

nappyaddict · 12/12/2009 19:42

Don't get the Richard Soles one?
