to think that saying to a casual acquaintance, 'Oh, you have put on weight since we last met' is very rude

and I would have been within my rights to empty my cup of coffee over her head.

I know I have put on weight and I am not happy about it but I don't need some snotty American to tell me that.

yes you should have slapped her

ScroogeMacDog · 09/12/2009 20:28

That is not nice, for you

lolapoppins · 09/12/2009 20:30

What a nasty thing to say to someone. Hope she eats too many pies over xmas and that comment comes back to bit her on the bum.

oldwoman · 09/12/2009 20:30

It is extremely rude!

Do Americans have subtle little differences in what is acceptable to say?

RJRabbit · 09/12/2009 20:37

I remember being a teenager and hearing Mum say that to the next person who says that she's put on weight she would say "And you've got uglier". An appropriate response, I believe (and at least one can LOSE weight, whereas ugliness tends to be a permanent affliction)

chegirlwithbellson · 09/12/2009 20:38

Bloody rude. How could she not have known it was?

I had a 'friend' who used to insist on saying ' omg have you lost weight! You look so tired' every time I frickin saw her.

I knew I hadnt but it still made me feel crap.

I think its bloody rude to comment on someone's appearance at all unless you have something nice to say.

I dont care if someone 'doesnt' say 'you look nice' but it pisses me off if they say 'what a weird dress!'

MmeLindt · 09/12/2009 20:39

Thanks. Lol at her eating too may pies.

She is a strange woman. First time I met her she told me about splitting up with her husband and that she is happier now. And he can 'fuck his brains out if he wants'

Slightly TMI for first meeting.

Che
yes, reminds me of DH's favourite quote from Sense and Sensibility, 'If you do not have anything appropriate to say, please restrict yourself to comments about the weather'

I said, 'Thanks'

Doh.
