I'm not ill. But I was up several times in the night with a boy who is, he's snuffly and bunged up and not sleeping properly. I've been awake since before 6 (although he's still asleep lol) and I've been feeling rough for a few days, like I'm coming down with something. My ears feel sore and my head feels woolly but pre DC I wouldn't have considered calling in sick for this but right now work is the last thing I feel like doing. I have two meetings today that can be rescheduled and the rest of the day is paperwork and phone calls and blah.

Oh and my brother has just recovered from swine flu and I see him often so I'm a bit paranoid about that. I know staying home won't make a difference to whether I get it or not but you know....

Yes, I would call in sick.

fiveisanawfullybignumber · 08/12/2009 07:34

I had to do the same last week, so no YANBU.
You have a porly child, you've been up during the night and you don't feel well yourself.
Could you do some of the paperwork or calls from home as a compromise?

ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight · 08/12/2009 07:39

Thanks guys! I work for a local authority so there is a lot of sickness which I don't usually participate in. I just can't face it! Yes I can certainly be available on the phone but they probably wouldn't call me.

I would, in fact wish i could call in sick today but i am a sahm

ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight · 08/12/2009 07:47

Well if I call in sick I will stay home with DS so it's not exactly a day off! Just a day off from leaving the house!

The only thing that stops me doing this is the fear that I will feel even worse in a couple of days when I actually get ill - will you be able to take more time off if that happens?

And can your dc not go to their childminder/nursery like they normally would if you are at work? That way you'll get a proper rest.

ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight · 08/12/2009 07:58

I do mon-wed so if I get properly ill I'll be off anyway. DS goes to my friend on tuesdays so not really fair to ask her to have him if I'm at home!

oh okay, well in that case get some rest and thank god for cbeebies lol. Maybe your friend would have him for just a couple of hours while you take a nap?

I wouldnt ring in sick tbh,as where i work that would mean someone else being called in to cover me.

If you can & it doesnt knock onto someone else then do it,more for your ds really, when you feel rough as a littley there is nothing like having a bed made for you on the settee.

dejavuaswell · 08/12/2009 08:10

You will face this dilemma many times in a working life. Some people do take it to an extreme and I remember on youngish Mum who never (yes never) went a whole month without a day off in 2 1/2 years. She told me just before she left that the lack of internal promotion was the major reason for moving on. I kept quiet but thought a lot

So yes, take a day but do not do it too often.

babydalek · 08/12/2009 08:13

Lots of people feel rough this time of year but still go to work if you're not ill (you said so yourself) go in

ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight · 08/12/2009 08:21

Thanks for all opinions. No it won't affect anyone else unless an emergency comes up in which case my manager would deal with it. I haven't called in sick for the 5 months I have been back and don't make a habit of it. I am not feeling very well although pre DC I would have taken paracetamol and got on with it.

Decision made - I'm still in my jammies
