I am currently on mat leave and the LAST thing I want is to spend £50 on a crappy turkey dinner and to sit with people I am not missing at all and talk about work that I am not missing at all. I was invited a few months back but I said I was probably going away this weekend (bare faced lie).

I wouldn't have been able to go anyway since DS2 is permenantly attached to my boob but there is not one ounce of me that wishes I could go.

Instead I will eating Chinese on my sofa with DH, my lovely boys and watching Strictly

AIBU?

YANBU
I managed to avoid mine when I was still AT work, let alone on maternity leave.

God no. NU AT ALL

Mine is tomorrow night as well. I have never been in the 7 years I've been there. All that formal bollocks and having to wear a dress

No sirree Bob. Enjoy your chinese in the warm

aJumpedUpPantryBoy · 04/12/2009 21:22

You are not being unreasonable at all. For the first time in 20 years I have decided I am not going to mine.
I have been hassled by the organiser, but I have stayed strong.
I hate the whole thing - I'm not very sociable, and I see these people every day anyway!

Enjoy your evening at home

maxpower · 04/12/2009 21:23

YANBU - I always lie to get out of my work christmas do. I can't bear them.

malung · 04/12/2009 21:23

God no, you are so right. After the age of 21 or so, a works night out must be everyones idea of hell.

I am amazed that anyone finds them
enjoyable.
Crap food, slow service and usually boring company. Why does anyone go?
Much better to have a night at home.

IMoveTheStarsForNoOne · 04/12/2009 21:25

YANBU, and next year you get to use the 'but I can't find a babysitter' excuse

cupofteaplease · 04/12/2009 21:31

Oh, I love my work colleagues- they're a really funny, friendly bunch. I'm looking forward to mine! We actually have two get togethers, so I must love them!

ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight · 04/12/2009 22:42

fifty quid?
My work xmas do is a riot. We go somewhere bargainous, get pissed and play a fab xmas present game. YANBU to not want to spend 50 quid for a boring evening!

NonnoMum · 04/12/2009 23:13

YANBU. Works Christmas Dos (like most social engaements) are for single people to go to so they can:
get tipsy, get laid, settle down and have babies.
Then they can stay in with their lovely partner and babies, eat take aways and berate the day they ever had to go out to Works Christmas dos...

Tortington · 04/12/2009 23:21

yaDnbu.

mine was on same night as MN London do, (aww shame) and i had bought the dress - but when the date came up it was a no brainer.

i don't want to sit with these people and pretend like we are all best buds. We are collegues. Oh and secret santa is always a nightmare.

kikid · 04/12/2009 23:26

I never go to the christmas do, i am an adult and don't do things i don't want to do..I just say no, surprisingly some other people say no too..

duke748 · 05/12/2009 00:01

I love my Christmas dos - but then a lot of my colleagues are now very good friends. I think its a great excuse to dress up, have a natter, get tipsy and dance stupidly - some of my very favourite things!

Of course YANBU if you don't want to go, don't go. But I'd say its a shame to spend 8 hours a day with people you obviously can't stand - maybe time for a new job after baby comes along?

YANBU at all! This is one of the few benefits of working an hour away from home.

YANBU

BUt I enjoy my christmas work do - mostly cos its a small group of people who I get on with. Plus they tend to make sure its cheap enough so everyone can afford it and pay it over a couple of months.

I'm looking forward to mine.

Except I can't drink (just found out pregnant) and I don't think they'll buy the antibiotics excuse. And I don't have a car so can't claim I'm driving.

bigchris · 05/12/2009 10:09

my work do depends on where you sit

if you sit with the non drinking driving crew it is dull

if you sit with the drinking funny crew it is fun

i prefer drinks rather than a meal cos then you can mingle and get away from colleagues your not so keen on

AmazingBouncingFerret · 05/12/2009 10:14

YANBU to not want to spend that much on a shit dinner and shit company.

I love my work do's we usually go to local curry house and get absolutely slaughtered.
I couldnt get slaughtered this year because im pregnant but it was incredibly funny watching my friends get drunk and then scaring the waiter into thinking id gone into labour.

VeronicaMars · 05/12/2009 10:22

No yanbu. Your night sounds so much better.
