In thinking Delia has a death wish for us all?

Just watched the Delia Christmas cookery programme on BBC2.

I know she always does this, but I haven't seen her on the tv for a while - everything was crammed with heart-stopping cholesterol - either butter or cream/creme fraiche. And then liberal amounts of nuts, cheese, fatty bacon etc.

It made me feel ill watching it.

And, wearing loads of rings on her horrible liver-spotty hands while preparing food - I hope they chucked the stuff away afterwards.

Admittedly some of the recipes looked delicious in small quantities but AIBU in thinking a full Delia Christmas is a ticket for the morgue?

And Bah Humbug to you.

A little steamed broccoli and brown rice does not = christmas

midnightexpress · 01/12/2009 22:28

Och it's only once a year, don't be so miserable.

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 01/12/2009 22:28

Christmas comes but once a year and when it does... you can eat salad the next day.

She's in her late 60s I think. Which is why she'd have age spots on her hands. You're mean. I think it might have something to do with your diet...

EvilTwinsStoleSantasSleigh · 01/12/2009 22:33

Oh come on. Delia did say "We wouldn't do this every day" at least once, whilst pouring double cream into yet another recipe.

wish she would invite me over for dinner i have been dieting for the last 2 months to compensate for good old fashioned full fat christmas over-indulgence, which is to be followed by a sensible new years diet... my mum has liver spot hands and i would never chuck away her food

ChunkyKitKat · 01/12/2009 22:34

She did say double cream is OK at Christmas, you have Delia's permission.

mamhaf · 01/12/2009 22:37

It's the bacteria harboured in all those rings that bothered me - the liver-spotty hands reference, I confess, is a tad cruel... tho encouraging everyone to stuff themselves with lethal quantities of saturated fat is also cruel, I submit.

And, if you think Delia's bad, what about bloody Nigella? She's always scarfing double cream bread brioche and butter pudding from the fridge in the middle of the night in her slinky dressing gown.

PeedOffWithNits · 01/12/2009 22:39

its all relative, you cant expect to eat that rich stuff every day, but christmas day and a christmas/new year family "do" - won't kill you as part of a usually healthy balanced diet

PeedOffWithNits · 01/12/2009 22:40

yep, nigella is worse, her food is so rich you can only eat a teaspoonful though!

secretgardin · 01/12/2009 22:41

this thread is making me hungry

PeedOffWithNits · 01/12/2009 22:44

make sure you only go munch a celery stick secretgardin!

PeedOffWithNits · 01/12/2009 22:45

....says Peed whilst snaffling maltesers

secretgardin · 01/12/2009 22:49

...[trying to do sexy nigella in nightslip impression in front of the fridge, but failing horribly in old comfy maternity pajamas and limp celery stick hanging from mouth]...not as easy as you may think

GrimmaTheNome · 01/12/2009 22:49

Its to offset the fact that turkey and veg is actually the healthiest thing many of us eat all year.

Heathcliffscathy · 01/12/2009 22:51

have some more butter with that

Pixel · 01/12/2009 23:05

Never mind the food, I want Delia's house.

sammysamsam · 01/12/2009 23:18

agree whole heartedly with pixel forget the food- i thought i was the only one lusting after her house!..

mellifluouscauliflower · 01/12/2009 23:37

Sounded like the house was a bit of a long way from Waitrose for my liking...

When I saw the title of the thread, I thought you meant she would kill us with all the work. It makes me ill just thinking of making 3 different sauces in one meal...

pooexplosions · 01/12/2009 23:46

you're a killjoy. Go put your head in a bucket of double cream.

And who takes their rings off to make dinner? I don't, why should Delia?

MadameDuBain · 01/12/2009 23:57

Oh god yes Nigella is terrible - in fact it was at the moment in one of her weird telly series when she pretended to go down and eat about 5000 calories' worth of brioche bread-and-butter pudding with caramel sauce and cream or some such at midnight after a party, that I went right off her. I am all for eating what you want but it was starting to look like she was promoting an eating disorder, and it made me uncomfortable.

And Jamie too - all that healthy school dinners stuff and educating the poor, very admirable, but if you are a middle-class coffee-table-recipe-book-reading type it's fine to make as many butter and cream-stuffed puddings as you like, apparently

At least Delia is refreshingly uncool and does point out it's just for special occasions. And I love the way that after all these years she's still slightly stilted in front of the camera. I made her scones today as it happens. National treasure, etc.
