In thinking Delia has a death wish for us all?

Just watched the Delia Christmas cookery programme on BBC2.

I know she always does this, but I haven't seen her on the tv for a while - everything was crammed with heart-stopping cholesterol - either butter or cream/creme fraiche. And then liberal amounts of nuts, cheese, fatty bacon etc.

It made me feel ill watching it.

And, wearing loads of rings on her horrible liver-spotty hands while preparing food - I hope they chucked the stuff away afterwards.

Admittedly some of the recipes looked delicious in small quantities but AIBU in thinking a full Delia Christmas is a ticket for the morgue?

I was wondering where we were supposed to cook the roast potatoes with the huge turkey taking up all the space in the oven....

GetOrfMoiLand · 02/12/2009 17:25

I think the assumption is that you have ^two ovens, darling.

Actually, I think Nigella addresses this well, you cook your turkey, then take it out to rest for 30-40 mins or whatever, in that time your spuds can finish cooking (plus stuffing and anything else which needs to be in the oven).

funtimewincies · 02/12/2009 17:33

Ah GetOrfMoiLand, that'll be the range oven or Aga that I'm supposed to have in my thatched cottage kitchen, entered through a door with a rustic (homemade) holly wreath using greenery from the extensive grounds.

I knew that I was going wrong somewhere !

Delia pointed out these are recipes for treats, ie not to have everyday.

There's nothing wrong with cream, and recently advice on eating eggs was changed; we're not eating enough, apparently. And, as long as the rings on her hands were clean, what's the problem?

I enjoyed the programme, and plan to have a go at a couple of things. (Not the turkey, we don't do turkey, we have a really good beef rib joint, yum.)

bratnav · 02/12/2009 18:33

I have to agre with a few others on here, Delia's sausage fingers and prissiness (is that a word?) make me shudder, but I have never had a bad dish from one of her recipes. I think this is pretty impressive, given that I was bought it when I moved out of home at 17.

Can I go to Nigella's for Christmas, but invite Nigel along? Judging by their respective reciprocal comments on each others books, they get along very well

bratnav · 02/12/2009 18:34

'it' is her complete cookery course btw

acebaby · 02/12/2009 18:42

Did anyone else notice the comments about home cooking actually saving time in the supermarket ? I thought that was a bit odd. There are loads of reasons to cook things yourself, but I wouldn't have thought that that was one of them!

hohohonotlongtogo · 02/12/2009 18:46

i really like delia don't be nasty to her she reminds me of my old food tech teacher

Earthstar · 02/12/2009 18:46

Delia doesn't appeal to me at all

I find her very dull and yet scary too, I'm never that relaxed around women who love footie

i am scared that if I cook like her I will turn into her...thus I prefer Nigella

Thingiebob · 02/12/2009 18:51

If we're moaning about hygiene, I hate the way Nigella lets her hair hang down in her food and the constant licking of spoons and the heavily painted nails.

Really unhygienic!

hohohonotlongtogo · 02/12/2009 18:53

acebaby yes i did about "saves you trapsing around the supermarkets!" do you not have to buy the ingredients? i still like her though

FabIsVeryHappy · 02/12/2009 18:54

YABU and rude.

You could have turned the telly off...

nickytwotimes · 02/12/2009 18:57

See, the thing with most cookery programmes is
a) most viewers never make a thing or
b) make or two of the recipes for a special occassion.

My problem with Delia (I like her food) is her condescending attitude at times.

I was actually shouting at the telly last night when she was explaining what a panetonne is ffs. ANd marsala. Jesus, who doesn't know what a panetonne is nowadays? Particularly people who would be watching a cookery programme.

nickytwotimes · 02/12/2009 18:57

That should be 'make ONE or two'.
Ahem.

Anya4 · 02/12/2009 19:02

I don't know what a panetonne is, and I would consider myself reasonably cultured/educated !!

pointydogg · 02/12/2009 19:03

I didn't see the delia show.

However, there is no way that delia made fattier, gooier, slobberier recipes than nigella. Her recipes are generally foul. And delia wouldn't have been licking her fingers like a good 'un.

DElia's personality is not so pleasant. Possibly slightly madder than nige.

pointydogg · 02/12/2009 19:04

You don't know a panetonne? Don;t you pop into sainsbury's or m&s or John Lewis EVER at Christmas time? You cannot move for pannetones.

sazzerbear · 02/12/2009 19:04

I was surprised that some of the instrumental music inbetween dishes was "This is the Day" by "The The" - she never struck me as an indie fan!

pointydogg · 02/12/2009 19:04

I flicked through nigella's christmas book the other evening (I was bought it last year) and once again I came across nothing that I wanted to cook.

MrsJohnDeere · 02/12/2009 19:05

LOL at nickytwotimes - dh and I were shouting ffs at the tv about the panettone and marsala too.

nickytwotimes · 02/12/2009 19:05

Anya, I shop in Lidls and they are stowed out with panetonnes at Christmas. And I live in the arse end of nowhere.

nickytwotimes · 02/12/2009 19:06

MrsJD - glad I was not alone then.

mummymeister · 02/12/2009 19:07

The only problem with all the TV chefs is that they seem to have as "standard" things I havent heard of, they never have to cook whilst cleaning up after the dog/children/animals and everything looks far too effortless! Who does their washing up? My 3 won't eat anything in a sauce, they like veggies plain and meat/fish simply cooked. My Xmas dinner will be a glorified roast and they will love it. Bring on the sprouts!

pointydogg · 02/12/2009 19:08

re the the. Some wiseacre is obviously trying to funk up the unfunkable delia.
