cut the shag bands off. She is only 12 and today decided she would wear them.

I want to snip the bloody things right off.

AIBU?

Yes you are. She's 12, not 2.

Either reason with her or tell her she can't wear them - but don't "go behind her back" when her guard is down.

pipsqueak · 30/11/2009 23:45

dunno what a shag band is ? sounds ghastly though so i would deffo chop it off!!

MadameMoe · 30/11/2009 23:47

YABU. Sounds like the perfect way to alienate a budding teenager.

famishedass · 30/11/2009 23:47

I've tried to reason with her and guess what - unsurprisingly - she won't listen to reason.

So, I think i'm deffo leaning towards "chop off"

crankytwanky · 30/11/2009 23:49

Are these like friendship bracelets, only more, ahem, friendly?

SolidGoldBangers · 30/11/2009 23:49

FFS she's not a pet or a piece of property. Leave her alone. How would you like it if she cut up your clothes because she thought they were minging?

pipsqueak · 30/11/2009 23:50

someone tell me what a shaggband is- am very intrigued

famishedass · 30/11/2009 23:50

Why would it be such a terrible thing to do? It's only a piece of plastic.

shagbands

stealthsquiggle · 30/11/2009 23:53

Can someone explain them to me [ignorant parent of young DC]?

giraffesCannaeFlingPieces · 30/11/2009 23:56

We used to wear them at school, were just jelly bracelets and we made flower rings from them.

sparklethesnowman09 · 30/11/2009 23:56

shag bands i feel are just a phase, as long as DD is sensible then you should have nothing to worry about, i had them when i was younger and it was way before i had done anything.

i know most parents hate them, but you would be making things difficult betwen you and your daughter if you go behind her back like that.

crankytwanky · 30/11/2009 23:56

JUst googled.

I don't suppose at 12, or indeed any age, people are going to become sexually active on the advice of some jewelry!

The worst they can be is a conduit to discussion, surely.

Can you ask her to take them off at home, or when out with you?

famishedass · 30/11/2009 23:58

I'm gonna sleep on it. Thanks ladies.

IIWY (actually, that would involve being entirely more rational than I normally manage, but still) I would tell her exactly why you object to them, ask for her response, and then leave it to her to decide.

She's 12. The harder you push the more of a battle it will become. If you lodge your objections but tell her she is old enough to decide for herself, chances are it will blow over in a matter of weeks/months.

nickschick · 01/12/2009 00:01

All the kids are wearing them.
Even the altar servers had them on - I dont think they really promote sexual freedom and its just a trend - leave her be.

othermother · 01/12/2009 00:05

yanbu, cut them off and replace them with a tattoo and a lip piercing.
