To want to buy medicine for DSx2

DS1 is 3 and has a cough which irritates him at night and is keeping him awake. DS2 is 7 months and has a really bad chesty cough and is wheezing alot. Doc has prescribed some antibiotics to help his chest.

Anyway, as we are cough central here I have just ran out of baby tyxilix I bought ages ago and went to buy some more. The staff then told that all medicine apart from Calpol is only for 6 and over.

I had obviously heard that medised and some others had changed but did not realise there is literally nothing I can buy to help alleviate my sons' coughs.

AIBU to think surely someone could make something that could help!

Pineapple juice is supposed to be good for a cough.

Honey and Glycerine is good, you can get it anywhere, even Poundland.

LIZS · 30/11/2009 17:25

Warm honey and lemon ? Cough medicines are rarely effective.

Spoonful of butter with a little sugar mixed in. Granny's remedy but it works!

I just got Tyxlix chesty cough... it was from tescos, and has 2-10 yrs on the packet...

No-one asked me anything...

Failing that look for benylin or something, look at the dosage recommendations, if it's for your 3yo, 5ml on it's own, at least 4 hours after calpol or anything else will be fine.

BrigitBigKnickers · 30/11/2009 17:27

Forgot to say- lick off spoon slowly- don't wolf it all at once!

Thanks for the link. The lady in Boots said there was literally nothing I could buy but there does seem to be some.

Like the idea of pineapple juice though but I think I should avoid honey with DS2 who is under one?

Simple linctus dispensed by a pharmacist, nothing fancy, from as gallon container or Benylin cough and cold is for age 1 upwards Benylin

I've got CalCough - has that changed too?

Mishy1234 · 01/12/2009 08:35

I thought you could still get the ordinary glycerine based cough medicines. Other than that, a warm honey and lemon drink as already suggested?

To be honest, I've never found cough medicines very effective, unless they are the hard hitting ones which basically knock you out for the night (for me or DH, not for DS!).

I have found the best thing for nightime coughs is to put a few bowls of hot water in his bedroom. I am assuming he is still in a cot so its safe as long as they are out of harms way.

You won't believe how well the steam works!

I have now invested in a humidefier which I always put in the childrens bedrooms if they have a cough or cold.

Honestly, try it, its better than any medicine I've ever bought!!

Just to add to memoos hot water suggestion. We do that and add a tea spoon of vicks type chest rub or albas oil to the water. It works brilliantly for us.

PS YANBU to want to relieve your children's symptoms.
