As I have just spent 2 hours mopping up my utility room and saving the flat downstairs from a cascade of water.

Why does it always happen when dh is away from home grrrrr.

YANBU. Get a Miele. They are magical and wonderful - double the cost of a 'normal' machine, but designed to last 25-30 years and often last much longer. My mum has one that she's had for 13 years and it still looks brand new and has never given her a moment's trouble - I've got one and I love it. It's a little bit sad, but I sometimes just stand and listen to its (almost silent) spin cycle. I think the cheapest ones are about £500-600 and worth every penny three times over.

I have a Venezuelan woman come in and do those sort of things. No need for a washing machine and clothes are SO much cleaner when done by hand in the traditional way.
