To want a girl's bicycle that isn't pink and sparkly

Getting really annoyed, I want to buy my daughter a bike for Xmas, she's 4, and I am having real difficultly in finding one that's not pink. If it's not pink, it's got Princess, or Minx or some such rubbish on it or comes with a handbag or teddy bear! Would love to get her a red one but these are either all Spiderman/racing cars/Liverpool FC/Man U/Arsenal themed. Don't bike companies realise that not all girls like pink...

DD (3.5) has this one and loves it.

YANBU
I also did not want to buy a 'girls' bike for my daughter, but that had a lot to do with the fact that I wanted my son to be able to use it later (first bikes only last a short time!)

I bought a Raleigh 'Bounce' and she loved it.

BonjourIvresse · 26/11/2009 18:40

My dd had a raleigh bounce and now has a hot wheels one. The fire on it makes her go faster apparently. We have some put some girly spoky-dokies on it.

MmeLindt · 26/11/2009 18:40

Puky are great quality, a bit expensive but you can sell them on at a good price.

pigletmania · 26/11/2009 18:45

Wow Mme they are dear, i had one similar as a child and i think that it cost £10 at the time. I do like the bees one from Halfords, thats nice and it looks kind of unisex

MmeLindt · 26/11/2009 18:53

I know but they are great quality and you can sell them on for half the new price.

I think that they are dearer at the moment because the pound is so week. They are made in Germany.

MmeLindt · 26/11/2009 18:55

DD has set her heart in a pale blue bike, not sure of the make though. Will see if I can find it. Really pretty bike.

bogie · 26/11/2009 18:56

I got ds a great unisex raleigh max bike with stabelizers a few weeks ago for £5 from the car boot, it looked as if it had never been used it really is ffantastic and I will be using it with dd too!

It was simalar to this style but all yellow with raleigh max witten on the frame.

ihearthuckabees · 26/11/2009 19:10

Agree with Sazzles - Islaybikes are great. Have things like smaller brake levers for little hands and so on. My DS has had his for 3 years and it's in great nick still.

hanaboo · 26/11/2009 19:24

lilred, i wanted that one for my dd but she's 4 and its way to small, she needed a 16 inch one

she now has a pink/purple one.. oh well

queenofdenial2009 · 26/11/2009 20:31

Another vote for isla bikes. My daughter has always had them and they rock. Yes, expensive but designed for kids, much lighter and excellent resale value - islabikes will buy them back but you will have no trouble selling it on via sites such as www.bikemagic.com

mrspnut · 26/11/2009 20:37

My daughter has the honeybee one too, she really is a tomboy and that satisfied her.

skyninja · 17/12/2009 19:30

A belated thank you, and glad I'm not alone! Am going to get my son an Isla bike when he needs one. Found a Dawes one in silver and purple for my daughter, seemed a reasonable compromise!

Had a thread here on exactly the same point - some really good recommendations.

ya SO nbu

amen

MumNWLondon · 17/12/2009 22:02

I bought my DD a 16 inch one (BTW she is 6 and a 16 inch one would be far too big for 4 year old unless they were very tall) - it comes in purple or sparkly blue and she chose the sparkly blue. My DD would have been happy with pink but i wanted one she could hand down to DS!

My DS (3.5) now rides the 12 inch one - I bought a boys one - but in yellow and DD seemed happy with that at the time.

FuriousGeorge · 17/12/2009 22:47

YANBU.I bought a back and silver one for dd2 who is 4.She would not have wanted a pink one.Mine was £25 at a car boot, but I got it for £20 as I found a scrape on it.DD2 won't notice that though.
