we spent all of last year fundraising for her as she had Cancer!!!

It was bad, she lost her hair and had to travel to London once a week to have special treatment (we are in Scotland.

Lots of people spent alot of time collecting money for her and put on discos and events. I went to work the other to show off my pfb day and there she was, smoking away. Yes I judged. But AIBU to think she could make an attempt to give up for the sake of her health?

YANBU - how stupid!

ben5 · 26/11/2009 10:15

i would ask her for a refund of the money that was given to her while she was poorly. ungrateful girl. the money should be given to more worthy and gratful children

girlylala0807 · 26/11/2009 10:17

Im glad its not just me. I was going to say something but just complained to the boss who said someone else had tried to talk to her and she was not bothered in the slightest.

Grrrrr

Playing devils advocate but do you know that she is now 100% cancer free ? If her prognosis is limited anyway, she has every right to do what she wants surely ?

Ripeberry · 26/11/2009 10:22

She could get run over by a bus tomorrow. Chill it's her life. Stop using money as an excuse.
You all saved her, but that does not mean you 'own her life'.
She can make her own mistakes, she just better not expect any help next time...

nickschick · 26/11/2009 10:23

I think at 17 she is young enough to make mistakes and realise how silly she was when she hopefully reaches her 30s.

Nobody gets given wisdom -you learn it,often the hard way.

Did she smoke before....when you all raised money? smoking is an addiction and coupled with serious illness its a hard one to break - my mum smoked her cigs in her deathbed and she died aged 38 of cancer.

posieparker · 26/11/2009 10:25

I think it's sad but not ungrateful.

girlylala0807 · 26/11/2009 10:25

All I know is that she has "recovered" and is back at work.

Yes she can do want she wants I guess.

However, its the fact that there is a clear link between smoking and the risk of gettin cancer. She was lucky to get through it. Now she is at risk again which is hard to swallow for those of us who spent alot of time getting money together for her.

OF course you are pissed off. At the same time, it is a very common psychological reaction in young people who have faced trauma, to embark on a risk-taking life-style.

Teens in general think they are invulnerable: having been through what she has, she probably feels a double need to persuade herself that she is as invulnerable as the rest.

Some people take up risky sports or mountain climbing or sail round the world (all quite risky pursuits), others start partying or sleeping around. It is difficult to know how bound you should be think of your health in a different way from your peers because you have had to rely on other people to survive.

girlylala0807 · 26/11/2009 10:26

And we certainly did not save her thanks, thats not what I said at all!

Remotew · 26/11/2009 10:27

It up to her. I don't suppose that the cancer she had was smoking related. There are lots of cancers that arn't you know!!

pingping · 26/11/2009 11:37

Ask her for refund!! are you serious!! ben5

Sorry OP I dont think its any of your business if she smokes or not!! I understand why you feel that way! BUT its her life and I couldnt even begin to imagine how she felt about having Cancer at the age of 17

kidcreoleandthecoconuts · 26/11/2009 11:42

YANBU. It would really piss me off!
But it's her life isn't it.
