have I found the most spoilt child in the world?

My sort-of SIL's DD's birthday is in December. She will be 14
I met with my sort-of SIL (hereby SOSIL) last night and asked if she had any ideas for her birthday and/or Christmas present.

The answer came back from SOSIL that if it isn't objectionble, she would like some money for her savings account (no problem with that - prudence is to be admired in a girl...)

Because she is saving up for A MULBERRY HANDBAG

14 years old, I ask you... I am tempted to give her my collection 2000 make up and remind her what being 14 should really be about

AIBU to think she shouldn't even know what a mulberry bag is, let alone be coveting one?

kids grow up so fast nowadays, but good on the daughter to want to save for it herself, rather than demanding her parents buy it for her!

ShinyAndNew · 25/11/2009 15:45

Surely if she is saving her own money that is not spoilt. but something to be admired.

She has found something she really wants and instead of tantrumming untill she gets it and deciding that life is unfair when no one will buy her it, she is savong her own money.

TheCrackFox · 25/11/2009 15:45

Give her a book token.

ButterySpud · 25/11/2009 15:46

It will be an investment piece

posieparker · 25/11/2009 15:47

She should go to their factory outlet, much cheaper.

BelleDameSansMerci · 25/11/2009 15:48

At least she's going for something "classic". By the way, when House of Fraser have sales the Mulberry bags are often in them!

cakeywakey · 25/11/2009 15:48

If she's willing to wait until she's saved up enough money for a Mulberry handbag, I'd say good luck to her. I bet she'll love it and really look after it if she ever saves enough to get one.

If you point your SOSIL to Bicester Village, they have a Mulberry outlet, so she might be able to get one earlier than she hopes.

Chickenshavenolips · 25/11/2009 15:48

I think it'll be a good lesson. She'll save up for ages, dream about owning the bag, and then one day actually get it. At which point, she'll realise it's just a bag. Her life style won't suddenly be that of Cheryl Cole, and she'll be skint. Also, the bag will be soooo last season by the time she actually aquires it.

She should be reading Jackie magazine and saving up for riding lessons. Harrumph. Girls today.

sparechange · 25/11/2009 15:51

Posise, I'm actually originally from Somerset, where the Mulberry factory (and therefore factory shop) is
It is in a total shithole hellhole
Maybe my contribution can be taking her there to buy it
If that doesn't put her off, I don't know what will.

But her mum should surely be suggesting there is more to save up for than a handbag?

Maybe I'm just jealous that having saved up for years to buy anything other than a Next bag, I will be out-done by a 14 year old. It seems so unfair

Guilt admission: I don't even like them that much. They remind me of school satchels or men's briefcases. THough I do have a purse I quite like.

BitOfFun · 25/11/2009 15:53

Why is it a hell-hole?

Is it full of screaming SATC types?

Tidey · 25/11/2009 15:55

They are massively overpriced and overrated, but it's always good for children to try and save for things. When it sinks in that she's wasted £500 on an ugly handbag, she'll soon start acting like a normal teen again.

posieparker · 25/11/2009 15:57

I am from Somerset too! Online??

sparechange · 25/11/2009 16:02

Shepton Mallet, known locally as shiton Smellet
It is home to the biggest ICI chemical plant in Europe and the biggest prison in the south west
When I was last nearby, it was reported to have had the second highest rate of heroin adiction per capita outside of glasgow
It is the prettiest place...

YABU. She's 14 and she's saving for something that she really wants. Being spoiled would involve demanding it be bough for her

sparechange · 25/11/2009 16:05

Posie, just to clarify,
I'm not actually from Shepton
I'm a glastonbuy girl...

TamTam29 · 25/11/2009 16:07

I dont see anything wrong with that! YABU

what lady loves and cupckaes said...

Dont think it is a "new" thing, we were into our designer labels at that age and im 30ish (although it was Burberry, Chipie & Naf Naf) and reading Jackie was just not cool - we read J17, Mizz (and More if we could get an olser girl to buy it!) I remember saving hard for my Kickers - they were almost out of fashion by the time I had saved up LOL

However I grew up in London, and maybe we grew up faster than the rest of the country????

Bucharest · 25/11/2009 16:08

YABU because the girl is saving up for it.
YwouldntBU if they'd asked you to buy it!

porcamiseria · 25/11/2009 16:09

£500? more like £1500!!!

I dont know, I kind of admire her for saving for an investement piece and they do last if she gets a classic , better than High school musical shite

Tidey · 25/11/2009 16:12

I didn't know the price went that high, there was a thread a while back about them, and the ones I looked at were about £470 ish, IIRC. It's another thing I'll never understand. No bit of leather that will inevitably end up full of crumpled recepits and leaking concealers can possibly be worth over a tenner.

abra1d · 25/11/2009 16:15

No, TamTam, I think you're just YOUNGER than some of us.

sparechange · 25/11/2009 16:15

Well, that is me well and truly told
I shall we writing my cheque forthwith

God only help me when she gets to 18. No doubt it will be requests for Cartier watches and Asprey diamonds...

And thank you ladies. May you DDs be ever drenced in beautiful bags and your DSs ever harassed to buy them. I'm off to have words with DH...

Jamieandhismagictorch · 25/11/2009 16:17

When you go to a factory outlet, see how shit the stuff looks when it's not in a posh boutique, then you realise it's just a bag.

But good on her for saving up for the pointless classic piece.
