To be sick of motorists who don't stop at pedestrian crossings?

Every day on the way to and from school we have to cross a really busy road.

Fortunately it has a zebra crossing, Unfortunately no bugger ever bloody stops and its driving me crazy!

We stand there in full view and watch one car after another just wizz pasts.

Why are some motorists so bloody rude. I drive too and would always stop at a zebra crossing.

And surely its illegal not to stop???

I think it is illegal not to stop? Surely it must be?

I nearly got mowed down whilst crossing with DS in his pram by some absolute idiot who didn't even attempt to stop (i Had started to cross in plenty of time, not like he would have had to brake hard or anything). I make sure now I stand and wait to make sure they stop before I move.

I've really noticed that drivers in London (where I live now) are much worse culprits for this than up north (where I was brought up) but maybe that is just to do with a highe volume of traffic.

my experience is that drivers will whizz past (mostly) if you simply stand there patiently waiting.

I always look right at the drivers and try to make eye contact, and then proceed to cross. They always stop.

I have got to the point where I feel like throwing myself out infront of the cars to make them blooming stop, which of course would be just rediculous!

Technically, your foot has to be on a Zebra crossing for it to be a mandatory stop. It does annoy me though and especially those drivers that speed up to jump the light at Pelican crossing.

cat8800 · 22/11/2009 21:39

Same here, i cross one with my son every morning, the zebra crossing was only put down last year. more cars stopped for use before the the zebra crossing. it is very annoying.

GhoulsAreLoud · 22/11/2009 21:40

This annoys me too.

There are zebra crossings inside our sainsburys carpark and no-one stops at them. When I stop (which is whenever there is someone there) people always wave to say thank you as if I'm doing it just to be nice.

Look - most everyone is in a hurry, and won't stop if they think they can 'get away' with it.

If you are assertive and step out, they will do the 'right' thing by stopping, because it is the law. But always check (the eye contact I mentioned earlier) just to be sure - don't assume!

Was about to say the same as BetaDad. Your foot has to be on the crossing otherwise they don't have to stop but i agree, they should stop. Nearly got hit by a cyclist the other day who didn't stop. I decided to start crossing but had to step back again because i could see he wasn't planning to stop!

memoo · 22/11/2009 21:45

But how do I step out with baby in the pram and other two dc either side of me?

I agree, you cant just step out when you have LO's with you, because so often they wont stop!
